Intel E7300 to a Intel Q6600

Nvida 8800GT to a 8800GTX

He could just pop in the gfx card, but he has to buy a new motherboard if he takes the CPU. The old one is going to someone else...

Thoughts people??
 
The 8800GT to 8800GTX isn't really a worth while upgrade, unless he gets it for free.

The E7300 to Q6600 upgrade really depends on what he wants to do with the PC.

IMO it won't be worth it to upgrade to the Q6600 for gaming. Rather just overclock the E7300 to like 3.6GHz.
 
The 880gtx is a much better vga card, going from a e7300 to q6600 is also a big upgrade.

a 8800gtx is in todays terms is faily crap though but much better than a 8800gt. I recall the 8800gt's were like 2k while the 8800gtx was 5k.

For gaming the q6600 will pomp that e7300 something disgusting. The q6600 is an epic cpu.
 
killadoob, you're exaggerating much w.r.t the GTX card.

The GTX is perhaps 10% faster than the GT.

I was wrong about my first assumptions of the speed difference between the E7300 & Q6600 though.
The Q6600's stock speed is lower than that of the E7300, but it has more L2 cache per core than the E7300, which makes it a massive upgrade over the E7300 if you have multi-threaded applications AND overclock the CPU a bit ;)

As you can see in reviews like this, the 8800GTX is marginally faster. Will consume a lot more power though.

The Q6600 adds multithreaded performance, but actually loses slightly in single-threaded performance. Still, it gets the edge.

Holy cow, i don't recall the 8800gtx being so poor. it was damn expensive compared to the 8800gt
 
The only thing that I remember the 8800GTX was good for, was that it was perfect for baking in ovens ;)
It's the only card that I've ever baked to be honest, and it wasn't even my own...

Yeah but it came out quite a while before the 8800GT. The 8800GT was based on G92, which had a die-shrink, so it could be a lot cheaper for similar performance. Also the most high-end graphics cards usually have a cost out of proportion to their performance (especially at that time)
 
8800GTX has better repairing value than the 8800GT. IE it can be put in an oven and survive another day to be gamed on.

My 8800GTX (recently sold) ran Metro 2033 on medium grahpics but the area where it suffered the most is being a PCI-E v1 as opposed to PCI-E v2.0 which cut it off at the knees bandwidth wise. Otherwise the card is very good general stuff and low to medium graphics depending on game and native res in question.

As for the CPU, as previously stated, it will be better in multi-threaded performance but still oly marginal performance increase. You would also be able to overclock this chip (If it's old tech, why not?) to get some decent fequencies out of it which will be an improvement over the previous chip.

Now what you have to look at is price per performance increase percentage value. Yes it may be difficult to work out exact percentages but will the person be wasting money where it could be saved in the long run to get new tech?

As a last note: If it's free then why not!?
