This is what happens when your computer gets infected with ransomware

Had a mates machine that got infected with Locky Ransomware last week...Lucky for him I had been around to help him set up a backup of his drive 3 days before:D.
Its a nasty piece of malware. Ended up reformating his machine and restoring from backup
 
Interesting article that should alert people on one of the many threats that lurks online. :erm:

I am just imagining someone in SA receiving the ransom notice on their PC. The persons behind the ransomware will never get any money, plus an immediate format will be done to clear the ransomware. I don't know of anybody being stupid enough to actually go to the extent of paying the money just to have their data back. We are all a bit more suspicious in SA, one of the advantages of being screwed by our government and businesses hoping to get more of our hard-earned money. :whistle:

You do realize companies and individuals store more than just porn on their hard-drives, right? If it's the only copy you've got and it's critical data, you have to pay. Obviously it should've been backed up, but eh - people still haven't fully realized that yet.

These bastards should be put up against a wall and shot.

And paying the ransom is no guarantee of getting your data back.
 
I know of companies being hit by this. Most restore from backup (hopefully they have good backups) and format the infected machine. One apparently has been hit twice with locky!

Yup. Caught pants down in zero hour with Locky. Zero business data lost, thanks to sound backups but a couple of users had local files that aren't backed up that got encrypted.
 
Yep happened to my sister company 2 weeks ago. Network drive got infected. Restored from backups and all was good.
 
Personally been hit twice.
2nd time while I was still trying to figure out what happend the first time.
Just re-formatted and restored from backup's.

Biggest issue for me was trying to get PLC software running again.
Some of my older DOS based software was not able to recover the keys, as the companies does not exist anymore.

I agree, these guys should be tracked down and hung from their nuts !!!

no.

you do a ghost file recovery. format, reload.

the ransomware pretty much does a save as with the files, then deletes your original. the ghost file remains, and you recover that. A bit more work than just an HDD clone, but worth the effort/cost to some...

never pay the ransom money.
 
Never download directly to external hdds, download, disconnect from internet. When working with fotos, videos etc disconnect befor uploading to pc/laptop...scary times. People don't think about that.
