thize's thread - various issues - o/t from Unrestricted APN

Download speed = 860

Upload speed = 97

Download Speed: 860 kbps (107.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 97 kbps (12.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

www.google.co.za ping = 533ms average

What device are you using to connect? Phone as a modem, data card, etc.?

The speeds could be better, especially the upload, but it might just have been a temporary low reading in the uplink. Typically Vodacom uplink is quite fast.

Run 3 or 5 tests and post the reaults, this way we can see if you have a constant low uplink.

Huaweii HSDPA USB Modem

Upload Speed: 95 kbps (11.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Gonna disconnect quick

Test 3

Before you do anymore speed tests, and assuming you're using a notebook, go outdoors and try a couple more speed tests without the concrete and bricks & metal etc interfering with the signal indoors.

You get an unique IP, so that should be OK.

What values are you getting for a ping? If the 120 you referred to is 120ms, then it's actually very good and you should not expect better on a mobile connection.

Run a speed test on http://speed.vodacom.co.za

What are your download/upload speeds?

Running on the unrestricted apn with no firewalls is VERY dangerous. And in a gaming environment. You're basically begging to be hacked.

AVG alone is not going to detect all malware. You also need to scan for rootkits (ugly little buggers) and spyware.

What program do you suggest for rootkit scanning? Im currently looking into using "RegClean"

Can I get SysInternals Rootkit Revealer for free or must I buy it?

I ran RegClean 2.6

Personally I dont think I have rootkit thingies cos my internet data usage is fine. I love to check my data usage. So I think I would notice anything out of the ordinary. Trust me I cant stop myself form looking at current ul/dl totals and current speeds ';..;'

So back to my upload speeds? What is the norm for HSDPA USB modem? Have you heard of my "problem" before? Are you guys at some sort of a loss? Must I first try and get some other help? Do you think Im chasing ghosts? Do I need to find someone more IT than me?

-------edit------
Also I dont get any popups. Not even blocked popups. So the only non-internet connecting root-kit I could have would have to eb a latent backdoor and that shouldnt be affecting ul/dl speeds at all. Especially not the fact that I idle out at battle.net. So back to my first real question/problem. How do I get permanent communication to battle.net. I believe they send me packets but I dont necasarily return them when im ingame. Game running on host's pc as a server. And battle.net running simaltaniuosly at admin's in the background
------edit------
What are your opinions on my ping to google? What should it be?
----edit-----18:21
Got SysInternals Rootkit Revealer 1.71. Gonna run soon and then see what pops up. Will maybe have to let u knwo what results I get. Maybe I can get through the tutorial myself. doubt it though :-)
------edit------18:34
Running SysInternals Rootkit Revealer 1.71 . Dont know how long this will take. Thus im using my apps and internet so long. Hope this wont affect it too much. So far 4 things has popped up. I can explain 3. 1 being a mention for a cracked serial. 2 being daemon tools security protocols. and 1 acces denied. Think it is windows sptd services
-----edit-----18:37
Where are you people ???? :-) I want help here! Im open for communication!! ^_^

Your constant low uplink worries me. It will add to the overall latency.

Is there any way you can get a second test rig going? Someone elses system, etc?

800K downlink we can still put down to congestion but a constant ~100K uplink needs to be sorted.

Ok. How do you suggest I do this? Must I take my Modem to someone else's pc? Will it help if I go to 2 different systems. One 1.8 ghz and one 3ghz ?

-----edit------19:17
Im prob only going to do that at 20:00. With free air time and such :-)
So untill that time what do you suggest I do? Or are there any other questions I can answer? Or are you going to contact some people? Or do you have ideas waiting for my input of test results form other pc? :-)

I like info. Please flood me !!

---edit------19:25
just checking

----edit----19:34
no one online so will recheck from friends pc. Will prob be around 20:00.
So you can maybe make a reminder :-)

Also at my friend I have 3 bars on the signal. At my place I have 4 bars. Very stable. My friend also uses asdl and he has no problems as far as that goes.

----edit-----21:29
Back at home... Back to 4 bars.... Any idea what to do? What are you planning? How long are you planning?

Hope to get some concrete answers or ideas tomorrow {bouncY}....or just feedback at least :-)

Not that it will help with the discos, but the upload issue here reminds me of my first Option 3g+ card - uploads were always well below speed (allowing for variables) but downloads fine. Testing with a VC tech ultimately led to a swap out as the card was flawed... Weird thing is, as I was monitoring it quite closely, I know the card started out OK but in a week or three it went soft in the circuit board....

I have fixed location. Desktop computer. But at my friend with different location nothing changed....

How do I get a TEch to perform tests on my modem?

Overheating maybe?

Your slow deterioration seems to point to this.

Some laptops put the exhaust right next to the PCMCIA slot, and I've seen cards fry this way.

Dont have laptop!!!

And my modem itself is in no way near any excess heat except its own.

How must I proceed further with tests? Take it in? Phone 082 155? Take some tests u guys have?

Was responding to ryts' post...

If you can take the modem in, do it. First run a few speed tests with their modem and then a few with yours. If you see a constant lower throughput, get them to sort it out.

Have yet to take my modem in. However a couple of observations. When I switch back to apn: "internet" my browing is much quicker. I also have Internet Explorer 6.

After in-store visit

I took my modem in. It came down to the fact that when the technician inserted his sim my modem worked maximum capacity in my pc.

My sim seems thus to be the problem. He didnt advise a swim swap immediatly. First he tried working on the problem. He saw something about double GPRS settings or something on my vodacom4me. He dtried fixing it but couldnt. In the end he just messed aroudn till finally for no explaineble reason my uploads were up to maximum 384.

However my Downloads are still suffering below what the other sim card could achieve.

Will it be worth my money to pay R64 to swim swap? Will the vodacom4me settings be removed with a swim swap or will it simply carry over. There isnt any better technicians in Kimberley. So I eithewr need better outside help or someone should help him ^_^

Please let me know what you think
