Thor's VPS thread

Ubtuntu is based on debian yes. However debian is not current. On ubuntu the software and repositories are updated, cutting edge. This does bring a disadvantage in that it can compromise stability if a package is not thoroughly tested by package maintainers or the developer of the package themselves.

"Cutting edge" and "production" do not go together. "Stability" and "production" does.

Oh I see okey so I use the build in DNS records of my domain provider and just create an A record to the VPS

Next step.

FTP

How do I go about installing this since I will FTP most of the time.

Wait. looks like port 22 works in filezilla thats good enough for me

How do I change that port?

It seems too common to me and that is a bad thing.

I want it 9311 or something weird like that

don't waste your time with that. i can easily get any port you're listening on.

So what is the point of changing the default ports.

I need to learn best practices and security as well.

Say all the ports are defaults right.

How do I prevent unauthorized access from sketchy semaphore?

Deny all incoming and allow only outgoing?

But that will fck myself included right?

Perhaps go read about best practises. But ultimately there are many ways to gain access.

How long does DNS records take?

I did mydomain.co.za TTL 1600 A server IP

Ensure your server is protected against common things and exploits. Don't run bleeding edge.

I need someone to SSH in and report back here what I need to do and why.

I've read all over the place but since I don't grasp Linux as whole yet I'm lost most of the time when reading about the security.
