Three killed in police shoot-out

Three people were killed at the KwaMashu hostel in KwaZuluNatal on Saturday morning when police exchanged gun fire with a group of gun-wielding men.

Members of the SAPS National Intervention Unit, Hawks, K9 Unit, Durban Flying Squad, KwaMashu police and KZN War Room conducted an intelligence driven operation following an investigation into a gang that was involved in the Seven Oaks shoot-out.

Spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker said police proceeded to Kholwa Road, KwaMashu Hostel where they approached a house where the gunmen were playing pool at the time.

“Police introduced themselves and the gunmen started shooting. Police returned fire and in the ensuing gun battle, three men were fatally wounded whilst the others fled. Police recovered three firearms from the deceased, which included two pistols and a revolver with their serial numbers filed off,” said Naicker.

Cases of attempted murder and inquest were opened at the KwaMashu police station. Naicker said the recovered firearms would be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in any other crimes in the country.

“Police will continue with the investigation to arrest those that are still on the run,” he said.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni called on communities to work with police and to become whistle blowers.

''It is disturbing that these wanted men were hiding out in the hostel. We urge the community residing in the hostel not to harbour criminals. This type of behaviour is contributing to serious and violent crimes in the hostel,” she said.

Six armed robbers killed near Greytown

Durban - Six robbers were shot dead by police near the small KwaZulu-Natal settlement of Seven Oaks barely hours after they had staged a robbery 200 kilometres away in Newcastle.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane, speaking from the scene, said that the robbers, who were traveling in four cars, were confronted by police officers outside Seven Oaks, which is about 20 kilometres south of Greytown.

A shoot-out ensued, in which six robbers were killed and three were wounded. No police officers were injured in the fire fight.

Robbers in two of the cars managed to escape and one of the cars was later found abandoned near Pinetown. The fourth car has not been located.

The officers who cornered the robbers were from the Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad, the Crime Intelligence Unit in Pietermaritzburg, the police’s Task Force and the Pietermaritzburg K9 unit.

Zwane said that one AK47 assault rifle, two R5 assault rifles and two handguns had been recovered from the scene.

Zwane said it was not clear how many people were in the other two cars that managed to get away.

Zwane said that police believed the gang were involved in a spate of business robberies and possibly responsible for the death of at least one police officer. He could not provide further details, except to say that the injured gang members had been taken to hospital under police guard.

The agencies sound impressive, but the Durban flying squad only has two operational vehicles (PE flying squad is worse off with a total of one working vehicle).

May have been fewer officers in attendance than the agency names suggest. Substantial manpower would be required to approach a heavily armed gang in a communal hostel, and I doubt they really had the numbers.

Disturbing that they were hiding out of the hostel? That hostel is a regular hideout for all sorts of criminals and guns for hire. The police must know this.

I would love to see how you keep your wits about you when in a shoot out, dodging bullets and still trying to keep yourself and your colleges safe at the same time. While still trying to shoot back. This isn't a movie... Chaos is the order of the day. We should praise them for the ones they did kill. Those that got away will have their day still.
