Way to miss the point and simultaneously prove my other point about the bad attitude. The initiation ceremony is a symptom, not the cause. For example if more people knew about infection, antibiotics, the importance of sterilisation etc. they are less likely to send their kids to these things. I know several educated Xhosa families who never dream of it. Just like disease and savagery in Europe decreased with the rise of education the same can happen here.

Just remember that uneducated ignoramus who would consent to such things is the same guy who will rob you and hijack your wife. He could have seen the error of his ways and how much more profitable and better his life would be if he became a CA instead but alas he's ignorant so he sees crime as a suitable option. While he's at it he may as well teach that whitey who laughs at his culture a lesson as well.

At the end of the day, you can throw a whole lot of education and talk and talk into this, but you still achieved just about nothing. There is a point where talking no longer helps. Education is correlated with it, I give you that. However that isn't the only cause.

Interesting comments - but I'm missing something.

If you have an operation and die as a result of negligence or poor hygiene there will be consequences for the surgeon and/or hospital.

Here we have people with no medical training, taking a knife to young boys, somewhere in the bush, and every year dozens die -

yet there seems to be no accountability.

I guess part of the tradition is accepting there will be casualties but the tradition is more important than the lives lost ?

No it achieves a great deal, but if there is a deeper culture then education simply won't help. You have many Christians for example who are very educated and still rejects evolution. I know of people who are still for Volk and Vaderland despite being educated.

Education only dilutes the ignorance, it doesn't make it go away.

I just said that I know Xhosa families who would not send their kids to these things because they're well aware of the health risks. That is a prime example of education overriding culture. Yes people still deny evolution etc. but on the other hand people are no longer burned at the stake, that is progress.

Once again think of all the savage practices stamped out in Europe with the rise of education. Obviously we can't eradicate it completely but I'd still rather have diluted ignorance than highly concentrated ignorance.

The first few generations are always the hardest to change but once you have that right the rest is easy because the newer generations don't face pressure from their elders. Before you know it voila, cultural progress.

The situation is as you describe, however you should see that there is no need for a "go kulcha go" post. I thought we'd seen the last of that nonsense with the banning of Palimino, please don't pick up were he left off. Note that many other people (including myself) are critical of this practice but we keep it civil and back up our views.

Let me rephrase: It is sad that in this day and age there are still people who are held hostage to a cultural practice that causes harm to children who trust their elders to be their protectors and guides, instead of mutilating them in the bush and potentially causing illness or death.

I agree with you and other posters that education is key. However, what's your opinion of someone like Mandla Mandela and his position on that specific cultural practice? He's educated and it didn't seem to help.

Like Nicodeamus said there is just no getting through to some people. I put guys like that in the same category as educated but still incredibly ignorant racists, religious fanatics and conspiracy nuts. I do however hope that the majority will see the light eventually.

Indeed. Having a competent government/ruling party that actually helped address these issues would help, instead of aggravating them.
