Ticket for expiring drivers licence

I applied for my renewal on Friday and when paying the lady asked me if I needed a temp, I said no I don't think so as mine only expired 2 days ago. She said it doesn't matter, you have to get a temp even if yours expired a day ago.

Makes sense to me.

Who waits until the old one is expired before applying for a new one?

I apply for a new one at least 2 or 3 months before the expiry date.

Mine was due for end Oct last year, but went with a friend in July.... yeah. Got fingered... now my next expiry date is in July and not Oct

Well yea, thats why I try not to go too early. Besides, having it renew a month or two early is cheaper than paying for a temporary licence.

Me.

You forget about these things you know.

lol yea I forgot once, but as soon as I noticed I went and got a temporary, from the OP it seemed like he waited till it expired before he got another. I see now he went at the beginning of feb when it expired at the end.

Anyway I think its more likely that he forgot to go and pick it up.

I'm not 100% sure but if you take your receipt to the station perhaps you can get it reduced, not sure how exactly it works but if you forget your drivers but show it to the station within a certain time they reduce the fine.
There are different fines for driving without your license on you and driving without having a license. Typically they'll issue a fine for the latter, but if you take your license in to prove you have one they'll change the fine. Similar thing with car licenses.

Not really any point when your renewal automatically entitles you to a grace period post-expiry as long as you have proof of application for renewal on you.

Provided you apply on or before expiry date of your current licence you are fine. But you do need to carry your receipt with to prove what date you have applied on. Apply after expiry date and we recommend a Temp. However, the receipt carrying bit is only valid for up to 2 months after your card expiry date. If you card has not been produced by then you will need to take out a Temp.
They can give me a temporary one for free if they can't manage to make a new license within 2 months of application. I certainly won't pay for it or any fines that result from their incompetence.

According to this document from the Traffic Department, if you go to renew within two months of your licence expiring, your new licence will expire 5 years from when your current licence does. ie you don't lose out.
