I recently received a fine for my drivers licence being expired. My licence expired at the end of Feb 12 and I applied for a new one at the beginning of Feb which is still not ready for collection.

Does anybody know if this is legal as the police officer was adamant that in addition to my drivers licence I should carry the receipt of application.

Pls help!!!

Well if you applied they would have given you a tempory licence/receipt that you could have used to prove your case. I gather you did not have any of this on you so yeah sorry you did break the law.

sounds impossible (that your licence isn't available yet)...mine took 2 weeks

you need to have a temporary licence if it has expired....says so clearly on the reminder etc

This.
And besides that, they start sending you notifications a few months before it expires.

You have to apply for a temporary license separate at additional cost. If not done, the fine is valid. Sucks.

Obviously.

Otherwise every second poephol doesn't renew his licence and says "oh but I did, I just don't have it yet".

This ^^

I'm not 100% sure but if you take your receipt to the station perhaps you can get it reduced, not sure how exactly it works but if you forget your drivers but show it to the station within a certain time they reduce the fine.

You might be able to get the fine reduced if you write a letter explaining that you are very cash strapped at the moment ...

I have never received notifications that my licence is due to expire.

Make sure they have your right address then :p

I actually forgot to do mine. Finally remembered a month later after it had expired :D went in and got it + a temporary until the new one arrived.

I have heard more than once that if you renew in the month before yoyr DL expires then all you need to do is keep your receipt with you to avoid a fine. Then there's no need for a temp...

Maybe someone can provide a link if that is true

They won't let you renew without getting a tempory license if yours has already expired. YMMV

They give you a month or 2 grace. If you try and renew a year after it expired, different story.

Honestly, I don't think you did apply for a renewal. Reason: You do not know issues which you should have known if you went to the process of renewal. Verdic: Fine is legitimate. Pull your finger out of your arse and get your papers sorted.

You need to apply for a temporary licence at a fee. The receipt won't help you. You are exempted from obtaining a temp licence if you apply for your licence renewal well in advance of the licence renewal/expiry date.

Provided you apply on or before expiry date of your current licence you are fine. But you do need to carry your receipt with to prove what date you have applied on. Apply after expiry date and we recommend a Temp. However, the receipt carrying bit is only valid for up to 2 months after your card expiry date. If you card has not been produced by then you will need to take out a Temp.

As suggested earlier, write to the issuing Traffic Department. include a copy of your receipt and drivers licence. Odds are they will reduce or possibly cancel it. Ask nicely!

Got this in the post earlier the week.

tl;dr:

If you apply before your current licence expires, your licence is valid for 3 months should you have proof of application with you.

So as many have stated, you were in the wrong. Write a nicely worded letter to the traffic department and attach a copy of your receipt and they will in all likely hood reduce it.

Of course they do. The guy in front of me last year was 6 weeks overdue and they sorted him out with a temp (since he had to wait for the new license) without any hassle.
