Went in last weekend to get my Discovery big brother tracking device installed in a new car and they said their entire backend was offline and they couldn't help me.

Dropped by today and it's still offline, somebody must have really screwed the pooch for the entire system to be offline for that long.

Anyone know any more details about the outage?

Probably ransomware.

The staff members that are left behind to oversee the operations during the festive season are rarely the brightest of the bunch.
Definitively possible, they could have needed to restore from old backups or something and we all know what a cluster that is if you don't have a really dedicated IT department.

We once had a SQL crash a few years back. The IT guy responsible for backups did the restore, but it was dated back 6 months behind. Was dismissed after that. New IT guy now double checks each day the daily backup before going home.

Called it!!!

Dont like TWT, had a shitty experience with them.
I wouldn't generally use them, this is for the Discovery Insure sensor and they're the only people who can install it in Cape Town.

I'm going to pop down in a few minutes, their systems should be back now.

Moral of the story

don't piss off the IT dudes, yes, they Cost money and sit around not changing Tires or selling things to people,
but your org won't exist in any serious fashion if IT fails.

essentially everything is built on top of IT, people need to remember that, sad to see its often forgotten.
especially when everything is running right. but when its not, that's when you remember those dudes.
