Tim Cook faces iPhone slump

I used to hate Sonys 6 month cycle - I no sooner got the phone in my hands (new, cutting edge) and there was a replacement out

We also forget that the vast majority of buyers are not super geeks like we are, so a two year cycle may just have a very positive result if someone tries it.

iPhone people aren’t going to buy a different brand just because they need to wait after all.

If anything it gives them time to save so more chance to purchase outright as well.

They're just one compelling feature away from sweeping the market again...if anything, the last couple of years have shown that large numbers of people will buy iPhones even if the newer models aren't that exciting.

Merely stating there cheaper alternatives within the iPhone range.

Xr is a highly competent handset. Screen res at 326ppi is underwhelming, sure, but 6.1" screen, decent battery life, A12 chipset, single lens camera rated on a par with the Pixel 3, modern design! There's a lot to like on the Xr.

I honestly don't believe there many iPhone users jumping to android on account of the higher prices. In fact there's evidence to suggest the opposite. Android users switching to the Xr as it's viewed as a value proposition. Besides it's not just the cost of switching handset/OS. There's the cost of purchasing apps on the new platform.

Had Apple been more aggressive coming in at $600-$650, that would have represented excellent value for money IMHO. Cheap enough for me to dump my OP6? Probably not cause I'm really loving it...

Cheaper alternatives means you're forcing loyal Apple flagship fans to accept the law of diminishing returns which is ridiculous, and most will accept this unfortunately.
Ultimately most Xr owners are not aware of the specs or value and invest purely on it being an iPhone.

Can have some fun with that, first here is a quick article from Cnet about the class action lawsuit against apple:
The suit alleges that Apple lied about the screen sizes by counting non-screen areas like the notch and corners. So the new line of iPhones aren't "all screen" as marketed, according to the 55-page complaint. For example, iPhone X's screen size is supposed to be 5.8 inches, but the plaintiffs measured that it's "only about 5.6875 inches."
...
iPhone X series phones have lower screen resolution than advertised. iPhone X is supposed to have a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels, but the product doesn't contain true pixels with red, green and blue subpixels in each pixel, according to the complaint. The iPhone X allegedly only has two subpixels per pixel, which is less than advertised, the complaint said.

(yes, above is iPhone X not XR, XR is 6.06", with a giant cut out)
And then the battery life gets beaten by most modern Samsung flagships and Huawei and get matched by most others.
And that camera is definitely not on par with the Pixel 3. Pretty much any zooming or low light the Pixel 3 instantly wins, also wide angle. Think the only argument you'd have is recording, whereby the pixel 3 can't do 4k60fps (still think this is a software limitation, haven't seen anyone actually try using something like open camera to check), and it has abysmal audio recording/speaker. Normal camera photography, the Pixel 3 is still better.

And I would love to see your evidence of iPhone XR being a value proposition for Android users, most Android users don't even buy the Pixel 3 as it's really not a great phone besides the camera, e.g. the One Plus 6T would be a lot better a purchase and cheaper.

Next will be Samsung. There's already talk of the S10 Lite.

.
Good luck to the 2 of them. AFAIK no manufacturer measures and quotes screen size from corner to the corner below the notch.

Huh?

No one is forcing anyone to do anything?!

The argument is that a $1500 iPhone is too expensive for most. I think we can all agree that to be accurate!

But there alternatives! The most appealing being the Xr! Modern design, latest A12 chipset, most battery efficient of the X series, 6.1" screen, range topping single lens camera performance, 3gb of ram, IP67 rating, $250 cheaper than the X and a lot cheaper than the Xs/Xs Max. Don't see how there diminishing returns. It's not flagship but it's not that far off... Last years flagship X is bettered by the Xr in just about every metric except ppi.

As for owners knowing the specs, I think most smartphone owners are ignorant of their respective devices specs. Most probably know the brand of phone they using, maybe half know the OS installed on said brand but how many would know the storage capacity? the pixel capacity of the respective back and front facing camera lenses? the ram capacity? what CPU/GPU? body to screen ratio? screen size? screen pixel density per inch?? etc etc etc

There's definitely an element of forced persuasion, when you want to stick to the brand, and why should people compromise on specs.
The whole point of an upgrade is getting something that trumps the previous version in most depts.

Those that own an iPhone 8 plus are in for a shock when looking at the max so they have to compromise on an XR or stay with current device.
The XR on contract is around R700 ( thats flagship pricing) which in itself is insane when you're looking at it's average spec.

The "cheaper alternative" theory is a con. There's no value there.

You assuming the choice for 8 over X was purely size.. reality is that’s only partial..
- notch is stupid, till they fix no thanks
- finger print biometric is still best
- issues with having facial recog & system compromise
- weight
- newer features are not significant enough to avg consumer

And it’s that last one that’s holding them back.. that and iPhones can last 4yrs without breaking a sweat (if battery looked after/lucky) and even 6yrs with battery swop out.

While eSim is something I need for dual sim capability.. other features not compelling enough and switching to a 3-4yr refresh cycle which I suspect most people are doing. Apple customers are realizing that every year there are advance to be made but lately it’s held back just to make a release particularly in other product lines.. will we see a facial recog Mac line up this year!? I think they holding that one for 2020.. so guess what I will do. It’s dumb on their part as it’s the one device where this actually makes sense..

Tim Cook faces iPhone slump

Apple Inc.’s Tim Cook confirmed Wednesday that the latest iPhones, his flagship product, are not selling up to expectations. The news exposes his toughest challenge since taking over as chief executive officer from the legendary Steve Jobs: how to take the company forward when it’s top product has lost luster with consumers.

[Bloomberg]

Hang on tight.... Android Pie is busy chasing a lot of consumers abroad to iPhone. Sales will pick up soon as Android is being dumped by users.

Where did I say size is the criteria for upgrading?

You're forgetting the sheer difficulty in repairing these phones, so theoretically they don't last as long as you thing it does.
