Time for baby names

I have a few in mind, but I am curious (just for interest's sake) as to what 'method' you followed in choosing your child's name?

Was it a family name? I am steering clear of those; don't want to burden the poor baby :)

Do people still give more than one name these days?

Or did you just pick a name that sounded good on the ear to you?

I won a long standing bet with the missus so I got to choose. :)
 
i tried to find a name that was compatible with multiple languages and that was simple, pretty and feminine.
and that wouldn't be ripped off at school.

Not that it makes any difference...

My daughter is named Anushca. I keep getting comments from Indian people that it's an Indian name. Which I think is then a nice name for Western and Indian cultures. Various diffent froms of spelling for it too. No idea where I picked the name up from but it stuck with me since I was young and always said I'll name one of my daughters Anushca :o

It is indeed Indian - one of Mr Blu's nieces has that name.

Like you said, it does not matter either way - we are the rainbow nation after all, so we integrate things :)
 
We got about 10 baby name books. Then we read each name. ok not me, my wife. She read them. Out loud. Each one. And the meaning.

I went mad and chose 5 names. She (being already fikin crazy imo) stayed the same and chose 5 names. We then wrestled with those 10 names until we got to the names we named our children. Which weren't necessarily on any list...

We never once considered combining to names to make a new one as is the vrot custom in this country.
We never once considered using a name that was pronounced differently to what it was spelt.
And we never considered taking a household appliance/movie star/ food/ state of the weather and using that as a name. Yes I'm talking you, the parents of : Andrelle (Andre & Michelle), Miciael (:WTF: Michael), Oranjello (Orange Jello I kid you not), Storm (OMG), Angelina (its ruined) and Appliance (ok thats my domestic workers brother, but still WTH?).

LOL!!!

I agree, I dislike the weird spellings and weird combinations people come up with.
 
My daughter is named Jessica-Kay, we call her Jes and Jessie.
My son is named Tron, not after the movie, after electron & neutron.(afrikaans/french Theron)
They don't have second names.

We had a huge fight about traditional and family names, we then ditched that idea, we then each put 3 favourite names into a hat.

My sister has a baby girl with the name Zaza, I love it, it is short for Zakira (muslim name)

That's the best way to go, I think. No resentment years later!

Boring old traditional family names with a "non-family" second name. My son is Xxxxxxxx the VII and my daughter Zzzzzz the III.

Lol, you actually gave them numbers?

I have seen it allot and I find it funny as hell. (Personal opinion)

So you don't call him or her "Edward the 7th" or "Gloria the 3rd" ?
Just as such on their birth certificates?

On that topic: Birth certificates. When our twins where registered, we waited for them to create them, so the guy at home affairs (not that it matters but he was white) actually came out looking for us. He wanted to make sure that the e in their names should be writen as è which we confirmed. He then said he will have to so and see if someone can type it on a keyboard. I took a piece of paper and wrote it as: Lean(alt+138) and the same with Simon(alt+138). Explained it to him and off he went bringing us the correct spelling :)
 
We each picked a range of names we liked, from various sources - online, books, movies, names we'd heard somewhere, etc, put them into a spreadsheet, then went through them individually, marking them Yes/No. We then took our two sets of yesses and kept only the names we'd both marked as Yes. Then repeated the process. In the end we had two names we couldn't quite choose between, so we used both.

No, not on their birth certificates either.

I'm with Blu regarding strange names; keep it simple and remember that your child has to bear with the name forever!
 
lol if I ever get children (girl) I would name her either Gabriella or Stefanie :D
