Time Machine wiped 500GB of data in seconds

Time Machine somehow converted LaCie 500GB FW ext disk into a Backup
device all in a manner of seconds and it was an unsolicited, unauthorised action. What's more I had it turned off. Using Leopard 10.5.4 BTW.

Anyway I lost 500GB of data on the drive. Thankfully it was mostly backed up but still. I was able to use Drive Genius Recovery but that wanted 10
days to complete the scan process, partial scan yielded some good files.

Nasty.... I say.
 
And the other day you were telling me to get a Mac.... ROFLMAO :D

epic fail chum... epic fail. You keep your mac.

I wonder how it happened? There is considerable dialogue before a drive is used as a time machine drive.

I also wonder if 10.5.5 users have been affected.

I have no idea, but it hasn't happened with any of the USB disks I've used
just this FW drive. Strange and without warnings.
 
I had used my FW drive to backup two macs with TimeMachine and both times it required confirmation before doing anything to the drive. Strange indeed.

Definately did not give an OK. Strange. Anyway the data was backed up thankfully.
 
u should have checked the logs, seen how it got formatted, because i seriously doubt it would just format your drive for fun. Was the drive hfs+ ?

This is why I prefer manual backups, I don't trust my PC to figure out what I should keep and not keep.
