Time out's since upgrading to 4mb

Just upgraded from 384k to Do3 (4mb) and have been having some strange problems.

Running IPCop with Surecom ADSL router in bridge mode.

Since the upgrade every 30 mins or so I loose connectivity - sites fail to load and P2P traffic drops to 0. The modem doesn't drop/reset (still have the same IP) - the connectivity just dissapears for like 5-10 seconds and then comes back.

When its back I can download at full steam (360kbps)

I've tried another router (Mega 105) in bridge mode - same thing. So I thought it might be just be a dodgy line.

I've then put the router in PPPoE mode and everything runs just fine - no timeouts. :confused:

Here my modem stats when it pppoe mode - from reading a few threads about attenuation the below it not fantastic but it ain't too bad.

I've also been constantly pinging ftp.is.co.za - no problems there.

The problem occurs on my WA trial account as well as my TI Account.

Definitely odd - any suggestions?
 
Your DS margin is the reason for the 5-10 second timeouts... It should not be below 6, only way to fix this is to drop your line speed down.

Or applying certain settings on the router. Forgot what it's called to be honest, memory's poor :p

Basically, you can add settings to your router which stabilizes it (I've don it on Billion routers etc.)

On our routers at work it's called DMT, DMS (or something) in the DSL Config.

It adds more or less db to the line.
 
Have the same issue and I'm on 384K, DS margin dropped recently for some reason.
 
Just got off the phone to Telkom. Quite surprising. Got through to someone fairly quickly who was very efficient. Line dropped to 3mb and DS margin increased to 12.

Seems to be a lot more stable.

Guess I"ll never be getting that 8mb line when it comes out :(

Does the router model make any difference to the SNR?

I've had to drop to 3mbps and it looks like I'm going to have to drop to 2 :mad:

My SNR was 6 at 4mbs and is now at 8-12 on 3mbps - still getting lots of drops.

I've tried a telkom mega router as well as a surecom router. Would something like a netgear improve things?

I"m ready to rip out all the copper and tell telkom to replace it!!

With the Netgear routers you can install the DGTeam custom firmware which allows you to increase your SNR. I don't know how much this will help.
