Time to install an air-con

We were thinking about it last summer. Now we are starting to regret not doing it last summer.

Looking at something for the bedrooms only (upstairs), possibly a small central air-con system that can take the edge off of heat at night. The change in temperature from downstairs to up is quite grim.

Any recommendations of trusted installers; in Joburg?
Any idea (ballpark) on the approximate cost for installation?

Also think about ceiling insulation if you don't have it. The roof tiles get very hot and then radiate heat down into the ceiling of your upstairs room and consequently heat up the rooms more.
 
I also caved and bought a 18kBTU unit for our main living area, its been ridiculous this week and the R1k celing fans I installed a few years ago work a bit but the living area one packed up so not going to bother replacing it.

Rather put a nice light fitting in its place.
 
We have an Alliance Forrest series 12k BTU in our bedroom which we keep on at night and are looking at a 36k BTU unit for the lounge/dining room/kitchen area as we have seen temperatures over 30 Deg C inside the last few days.
 
We have the same thing, upstairs is boiling compared to downstairs.
Put in a Samsung Maldives Inverter 12k BTU.
We paid about R2k for installation because it is double story.
The Inverter part sounded gimmicky, but have not had any significant increase in electricity usage.
We run it for 4-5 hours each night. Keeps the room nice and cool.
 
Depending on the make, size and installer, between R5k to R10k would be a good starting price. Normally 12000 Btu is fine for a room, but discuss with the installer as well, since it depends on the heat load. Upstairs rooms are usually hotter, and if they get more sun during the day you might need a bigger unit. AFAIK 18000 Btu is the biggest you can install from a normal plug, above that is should be wired to the DB.

Was told up to 12000 BTU for normal plug, anything higher must be wired to the DB board.
And always go for the inverter range, consumes less power than the normal ones. Midea range is good as well.
 
Has anyone attempted in installing a split unit themselves?

I also heard 18KBtu should be wired but hearing a lot of folks have it plugged.
 
Make sure you get the Inverter Unit, more expensive, but will save you Thousands!!!
