(EDIT) 'Mods please delete all offtopic posts in this thread - including my own OT posts :)

IBurst have started using their adspend, the campaigns are underway to gather new signups.

This forum is currently the only real gathering point for a collective number of IBurst customers to share their experiences, and also operate as a single 'voting block' of customers.

Regardless of what IBurst intend to put in place as their assorted 'packages' they intend to offer the public, this forum already has a certain consumer power - as it contains a growing collection of IBurst customers online.

In order to increase this power, and - if necessary in the future - force IBurst to provide us with what we, as paying customers want - we need to gather up more of IBursts customers, make them aware of this forum, and increase our numbers accordingly.

This is not suggesting anything negative towards IBurst, its merely the logical next step to ensure that the consumer strength we have, maintains and increases - alongside IBursts own push towards signing up new customers.

It's great that there are individuals from IBurst on this forum, and that they more or less communicate here - but they do not 'represent' the management of Iburst - they are simply individuals who are presenting their own points of view. So whatever the official IBurst Corporate policy is, is unknown and remains totally unrepresented here.

Unity is Strength. And as Sentech have seen to their cost, this Forum is - on occasion - a force to be reckoned with. Not always. But often enough to have made sleepless nights for some Sentech personnel :)

So now's the time for a conscious push from forumites, to reach out to the public and exploit IBursts own PR campaign, and find methods of attracting the public and the new IBurst sign ups to this forum.

Gather up the newbies and alert them to the existence of this Forum, just so that those new online folks can then discover an alternative source of knowledge and information that is not reliant on the IBurst HelpDesk.

I'm not suggesting that IBurst IS going to be a negative experience, but regardless of how good or bad it might be, we should - as the coolest, grooviest, geekiest and most influential local Forum in SA at the moment - behave accordingly, and prepare quietly to assimilate and get the newbies that IBurst is now targeting, into this Forum.

We're a quiet (and not so quiet) online army of sorts.

Think about this: We cost Sentech untold millions of rands in the last year, by advising companies and people NOT to sign with them.

The press coverage of the negative experiences we were having, further reduced the effectiveness of the millions of rands that Sentech paid out on adverts selling itself.

This forum managed to hurt and dent a large companies profits, quite considerably. We did it. All of us.

That's POWER.

And just because we have power, doesn't mean that we need to USE it. But in this calm before a possible storm - its logical, sensible and advisable to piggyback on IBursts own rising public awareness campaigns, to further OUR own interests. Ne?

So how about reaching out into the public arena, and spreading info on this Forums existence, to increase our ranks?

The more IBurst customers we have on Forum, the more it is likely that IBurst will do what we require (as customers) - or face suffering a financial loss by our actions.

A company with 30 - 60% of its customers all operating in a similar direction, and demanding certain things, has to comply - or face going out of business.

That's consumer activism, unity, and strength. No marches, no need for anything much in the real world - but our combined actions online, can make a dramatic effect on IBursts 'real world' profits and effectiveness.

And naturally, IBurst is hoping that no one stands up and points all of this cool stuff out. Much better we all just selfishly worry about our own individual experiences, and rarely come together to operate as a solid wedge of customers with Demands.

So its graffitti time perhaps. Or if any of you forumites have access to printers - some leaflets or bits of papers with this forum's address on, and a heading like 'Considering Wireless Internet?' will go a long way towards helping the newbies who are getting blitzed with company propaganda left and right.

To take it further - If we can agree on the right periodicals or newspapers to target, I'd be happy to fork out some bucks towards a simple classified ad advising Iburst and Sentech customers of this Forum.

The more new users we gather up, the stronger we become, and better bargaining position we then have with regard to Iburst, Sentech, or whoever the new companies are that are still to come - in the event of these companies not doing what WE want.

What say folks? What say the Mods? I'm happy to fork out a couple of hundred bux and place a classified ad selling this Forum. Who else is keen to find creative, easy and fun ways of increasing our numbers here?

Pay one of those dudes that sell the homeless news papers on the street to give out pamflets with information on them to the people. Print 10000 of those and pay the dude like R200 for his trouble (then again, you never know if he's just gonna dump them in a trashbin or something, so get 4 dudes and pay them R50 bucks and give them 2500 pamflets to give out)

Btw, I think we should limit what LoneGunman can write in these forums... :D

Hi LG and Noone

If you want to launch such a campaign please let me know. We can maybe partly/fully fund it, depending on the costs. I think it is a great idea to inform people where to go regarding broadband issues, and as LG pointed out: “Unity is Strength”. These companies must know that they are being watched by users that are willing to act!

BTW: I read the full LG post :D Long, but worthwhile.

Regards,

RPM

If you get fliers handed out by company controlled street corner persons they actually check that the fliers are not just dumped. I like this suggestion. I'm sure its a pretty afforable way to get your message accross.

its in google, google will bring more visitors than flyers ever will, unless you can get a targetted group of people using a specific product like standing outside WBS and looking for people bringing out modems. if you were going to spend cash you should buy some google ads. Just an interesting statistic google brings 70% of all traffic to sites, even sites that are linked to other media such as CNN who can show its URL on tv all day long but still gets more hits from google.

Done already :D iBurst is one of our paid keywords.

its in google, google..

this will mean nothing to the guy on the street thinking about getting internet. people usually get fed a bunch of bullsh1t by companies that KNOW they're not very clued up on "online" stuff.

so saying that a person can get here by google (although relevant) won't attract the uninformed users without internet.

hellkom only got where it is today because of the media coverage, not google.

well i dont think this is a good forum for the un-informed, and the un-informed wouldn't be interested and they have no frame of reference, for example joe winky see's on tv he can get super duper quadrupeler fast 192 adsl, for a certain price, he says oh boy now i can stay on the net all day and download everythign ever!! now joe winky wont end up getting pissed off because he only gets 160kbit or he has bad latency. He was told his net will be faster, and it is, and he was told he can be on 24/7 which he can, so if at anytime he doesn't not have faster net or gets disconnected often, he wont come here he goes to telkom. Just look around dude, MTU, ICASA, RWIN, packet, frequency, RSVP, ASAP, bandwith, latency, packet shaping, port shaping, packet inspection, packet.... this is not a newbie friendly board.

Oh and P.S. EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT GOOGLE. IF ANYONE, FROM SCIENTIST TO DUMSH*T WANTS SOEMTHING, THEY GO TO GOOGLE.

LG, my attention span has been drastically reduced by all this report bashing going on, so I didn't read your whole post - I scanned through it, if I could summarise what I absorbed - we need to find ways of alerting potential iBurst customer to the existence of this forum, correct?

The value that MyADSL/MyBroadband has is that newbeez can come & ask broadband service related questions/advice & get numerous experiential opinionated answers, and from there make up their own minds as to what's best for them. Personally I think this forum is a great place for the uninformed to become informed - simply ask & ye shall receive answers & advice...

You've just proven my point, if joe winky is disconnected often, or unhappy about the cap, or they incorrectly bill him, a campaign like this handing out fliers on the street would be more successful than him typing in "i am pissed off with telkom" in google.

thats IF he knows what google is to begin with

nah i'm just curious, i mean, i'm not against the idea, I just want to know where you are going to find a bunch of broadband users in one place who arent the experienced type. You could go to a mall... hand out 1000 flyers and get maybe 10 people, go to a CBD hand out to a bunch of tech literate types who probably would have known about myadsl already

what street do you find broadband users in? we are a tiny minority spread all over the place.

Pick a busy street in Randburg, Centurion or Pretoria East. A lot of the richer suburbs want to know more about their internet options. There are a ****load of SMME business owners living in these areas who have to pay huge dial-up costs each month. How do I know? My friends keep on referring these types of people to me to answer their questions because I 'work with computers'. I give them the basics:
1. Hate Telkom
2. Visit mybroadband.co.za

ok so basically rich people, so joe winky (who actually lives in soweto) isn't included, ok thats all i wanted to know

I sometimes get the feeling you post only to try and start an argument. You asked a question and I gave you an anwser. Yes, at this stage broadband will appeal more to the richer demographic, that's why all the companies offering broadband target these areas first. A lot of businesses (including the one I work for) also operate out of these areas so it does make a lot of sense to hand out flyers there first.

I never stated that poorer areas should be excluded, but if you want an area to focus on (which you did), the richer suburbs would be the obvious first choice.

Hey, don't knock yourselves. I came in pretty much as a newbie. Now I know all these cool acronyms, like MTU, MSS, ICASA, UTD and LSM! :D
My point is, I agree with LG. Get the newbies in, and educate them. That way they will not remain blinded to their pitiful plight while sitting on their HomeDSL192 package and paying the earth for it.

Hi Raithlin

Agreed! Many users on MyADSL start to read our forums as newbies, get educated, register and become valuable members. I have certainly learned a great deal here and I know I am not the only one. Therefore: flyers will be great and as I have mentioned, we will even fund it.

We also know that companies do not like this kind of organized consumer action! Without such a meeting place they can always say ‘only a handful of users are experiencing problems’ etc., but this open forum makes such statements meaningless and even dangerous. It can quickly lead to organized consumer action as Sentech found out.

RPM

[post=174628]I totally agree, MyADSL/MyBroadband is 100% suited to newcomers as well as vintage geeks.

One thing that annoys me intensely in any online community is newbie-bashing. People learn gradually & not by instantly downloading 8000 posts directly into their brains. Forumites should be more polite instead of using "RTFF", just nudge newbies in the right direction of googling or post a link or something.[/post]

For folks curious and interested in placing an ad - here's a link to The Star's online ad placement page - (under the 'Personal' column - which is where the majority of readers of all types tend to scan through..)
http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_...r=9&class=PERSONAL&stype=enterad&cat=PERSONAL

For a paper ad, 'simple and direct' is better, like
IBURST-ADSL-SENTECH-3G..
CONFUSED ABOUT YOUR INTERNET CHOICES?
SURF TO A FREE INDEPENDENT
ONLINE FORUM TO FIND THE TRUTH.
http://www.mybroadband.co.za

I don't have credit card/internet banking - but if anyone is able to source how much exactly the above will cost, to run in The Star for a week, in the Personals - we can then move to a simple next step.

Instead of wasting energy and time arguing whether its good or not, or effective or not - how much will that placement cost - and depending on the figure - if a Mod/Boss of forum can place it, I'll simply deposit the money in their account.
(Let's see if the figure is just a few hundred - or whether its some frightening amount)

Action is always better.

Especially seeing as IBurst are reading this forum, and its ALWAYS in their interests - (as with Sentech before them) - to have forumites waste time and energy arguing stupidities and defusing topics with inane comments.
(Which is why I've been getting slowly more hardcore and bitchy about the off-topic rubbish - its exactly what IBurst/Sentech want. Look at most large overseas forums and the self-discipline exercised by members - which makes those forums a genuine 'threat' to whoever they focus on)

So cutting to the chase: can someone find out, or post here how much would the above advert cost to run for a week in The Star Personals? (and how much for 2 weeks/one month run) And if also find out if the price is the same for the Cape newspaper as well as the Natal paper - or whether they have a special rate for a 'national' ad, to run.

Seeing as IBurst and 'friends' and their sympathisers are watching this forum with interest, let's make them swallow nervously :)
Get a figure, if its not too hectic, I'll pay it.

i like the idea of proactively bringing people to myadsl...

The way I found MyAdsl was through www.hellopeter.com when I complained about Sentech on the forums and someone suggest I come to myAdsl...

Woe and Behold I found peope ALL moaning about Sentech and a nice user base to bounce, flame, argue with, learn from, teach and have fun with...

And hey dont diss LGM's post's I used his FAX addapted to email to cancel Sentech and it worked... maybe Ken Theron got bored to death reading it :D

and whats this forum without Noone and Slimothy who say alot without really saying anything ? But without all these characters this place would be dull... So yeah I think everyone rules here...

lol...:D

Moving on....I must agree with the idea of starting off handing out flyers in the richer suburbs, this will generate the most interest as people / buisness found in these aera's are the sort who are interested in / can afford broadband. This is just a starting pt and other ideas must also be investigated properly before spending cash on it... just my few cents

one place where fliers will get you somewhere is centurion centre. middle income or higher families, the area is relatively young so you want have a dust-farter looking for a 1mbit conny :D
