I have an external I use that's connected to my work Dell running Windows 7x64.

There are backups in place on that pc taking place daily that backup my files etc.

I'm currently using another external drive as Time Machine for my MacBook but that hdd failed.

Is there a way I can get Time Machine working to back up to an external or network shared hard drive?

A diy Time capsule would be ideal.

Got it working.

All I did was create a sparse bundle image of 500gb under disk utility.
Mapped a network share folder.
Copied over the image I created and mounted it, formatted it with Mac OS Extended.
TimeMachine picked it up right away and gave me the option to start the backup.

Under TimeMachine I now have 2 Backup "disks" showing.

TimeMachine to Dell
External USB3

Setup under User & Groups to connect to network share on login every morning.

Did some more "fiddling"

Our D-link Wireless Router has USB port, connected up an external hard drive to it and shared the drive.
Copied over Sparse Image and TimeMachine picked it up.

Pity USB port is USB2.

So setup Dell to backup to the same external drive as well.
So both MacBook and Dell backing up to this external without a hitch, just a bit slow for large files.

So started backup at 9:40 over ethernet, backing up 111GB progress now on 54%.

Sure the initial large backup would take long, the incrementals to follow will be quicker.

how was the hard drive attached to the router formatted? MacOS or FAT32?

So 2TB ext connected to router via usb 2 over gigabit ethernet, 113gb backed up took approx 6+hrs.

This mornings backup when I started Mac took 1min.

Yeah it is always like that on the first initial backup. But from now on it will take much quicker (also depending on new files and the size of the files).

All this effort for TimeMachine?

IIRC, you use CC. What is your workflow for that? I want to use it myself for backups (incremental) instead of TM.
I switched to SuperDuper a while back. I plug my external in - it backs up - I unplug external. I could schedule it and I could do it over wifi but since I travel with the backup drive I prefer to have it handy.

Was more to kill time than anything else, still prefer to use an external connected via USB3.
I still manually copy apps/docs to a network share. as well.

Going to try super duper this weekend.

I tried a time machine restore after a drive failure and it was too slow for me - with a cloned drive I can pop it in and immediately be back up and running again. Since I switched to a fusion drive it means I've got two possible points of drive failure that can cripple the machine but at least I can get back to work and sort that out later when I've got time.

The sparse image you create was formatted with Mac Journaled

Thanks.

Can you move an existing time Machine external drive to the router to continue with backups from where it left off?

Doesn't work. Tried it a while back and Time Machine sees USB backups and wireless backups as different backups. There is no way to change this behavior.
