The barstaff at the 'posh' clubs/bars here in jozi for some reason expect a R10/R20/R30 tip for handing you a beer from the fridge behind them. Justified?

Hey If you fixed a cocktails or mixed a few drinks fine, but for handing me a beer?

Thoughts people?

Rubbish. Unless you've filled my order of a few drinks, or spent time mixing me a cocktail I'm probably not gonna tip you.

Although a little blue bird did tell me of some poor soul who tipped his waitress R200 on a R600 bill after one too many jaegers.

Tip them once quite well and make sure that you stand out. So talk to them if you can. Then revert back to normal tipping protocol of keep the loose change and they will prioritize you when they see you again.

Varies of course, but R18 for a beer at FTV sandton.

But the point is, that its way out of proportion. and you get some guys who try to give you R50 worth of change in R5 coins which they then proceed to tap on the bar as if to say "I expect this as a tip" instead of passign you the change on a plate and leaving the decision up to you.

We love those customers!!
Tip the bar lady a 20 tell her to keep up the good service and then you'll tip her good before you go. Then give her a 100.
that way you end up spending just 120 on the bar lady and not 300- 800.
(Thats how much you ussually make out off a good and drunk customer)
And she'll remember you next time you come in and have your drinks ready and cold. do not be rude you gonna wait and get hot beer.:D

I bought my first car off bar tips :) One too many and they tip like crazy.. My dad owned the bar, and on one occassion a guy who tipped me something like R500 (7 yrs ago) came to my dad the next day asking if he could ask me for the money back.. haha..

Edit: agree with DJK.. A once off big tip, and bits and bobs of change thereafter.. Maybe another R20 when leaving..

I tipped my waitress R300 once for a bill that I thought was just R500. Gotta love tequila...:o

Barmen are the scum of the earth!!

They expect a tip and always cheat you out of your money. Always demand to see the slip when they bring your beer.

Most barmen steal a R1 or R2 off big orders.

Eg. I order a round of drinks, it comes to R93 - the barmen reckons, its R95. So he just cheated me out of a R2. Imagine how many R2 he cheats all the other patrons out of, and on top of that you would normally tip him - lets say a R5. So he scored a R7 off you.

Another thing that happens to me so often in clubs is, ill goto one bar and ask - how much is the Jameson. barmen will reckon R16 - ill goto the other bar in the club and ask the same question, i normally get a different answer like R15 or R18

Barmen are scum of the earth!! Always demand to see the slip to check how much your drinks really came to.

lmfao
My favourit was a guy named Dan. Single johnny black and soda = R27.50
He paid with R100 bills and i got to keep the change after about 8 - 10 of those he would come to say bye and tip me another 200 or 300 hundred!!:D:D:D

You can, just leave a credit card with them (don't get too wasted and forget it there though). Then you just tip once off at the end of the night.

Like I said, most clubs. Many refuse to accept tabs these days. And yes, I have also fallen victim to the forgotten credit card mistake...:o

In his defence, she was hot. I'm mean... erm...

I fooking payed R126 for 1 beer and 2 hand grenades (tequila shot + jager shot + half a can of redbull) at FTV.

Thus 2 teq(R36?) + 2 jagers(R36) + 1 redbull (R20) + 1 beer(R34) :(

But the barman was cool thus he got a R20 tip :p

I hate posh places

Doesnt sound right. That is my usual order at FTV and I pay around R80/R90 IIRC...

yeah, at some places they like to give you your change in coins, thus expecting a big tip (if not everything).

but imo, if i know i'll be frequenting the bar and its busy, my first tip will be 10-20, nothing really afterwards, and tehn for my last drink maybe somehting extra

otherwise expect little, if no tip if its just one beer
