So I took the plunge and installed Ubuntu 11.04 beta.
Since things have changed quite a bit in 110.04, I though a tips and tricks thread might be useful?

I'll start off with the following:

* Drivers for Intel HD Graphics are horrible in this release. Compiz is significantly slower for me, and blur is unusable where it used to be fast. Adding the xorg-edgers repo fixed everything for me.

* Skype is no longer in the default repos. Grab the deb from the skype website, which still works fine.

It is still a beta, so their could still be issues.

What are your thoughts on Unity?

It looks like the Intel driver will not change for final release :(
Unity is ok, but I think it fair to compare it to the early days of KDE. It needs work and polish. Currently I'm running Ubuntu classic, but I basically hide all bars, and run avant window navigator, which gives me back a systray (missing from Unity), inidicator applet, taskbar etc. The dock runs vertically on the left, so I still win on screen real estate on a widescreen (I'm running on a 13" HP Probook).
They should have made Unity more configurable for power users. I have combined the top bar on unity and the actual dock, into one area with awn (without global menu of course).

It should mature over the next 6-12 months (like KDE 4 did) the initial releases were terrible but as time went on things started coming right.

I'll install it once my engineering test week is over and I have more time to play around with my PC :D

I'd just like to say FF4 rocks.

FF3 used to be terribly slow on my netbook and basically made browsing a pain the bum!

Now on 11.04 (Beta) and using FF4 as my browser rocks! Its fast, stable and a big big improvement! (Thank goodness I don't have to install chromium!)
