tips for setting up webcam security surveillance

So I'm going on holiday soon and have heard that you can use a webcam to keep an eye on your house. I hear that there is software that will email you whenever it picks up movement, and allows you to log in and see what is going on.
I have no idea where to even start setting up something like this- any advice you guys would like to offer? Does it stream constantly, or only when you log in? does it stream through a website? how does it work?

Try and position the camera/s so they view a passage coming out the living room, or where there is access. Some programs will send you an email if there is movement within the range of the camera

ISPY is very good with excellent features. I set up a webcam to watch my driveway, and a day later someone decided to pinch a few things from my yard. I printed photos of the person, and the police managed to lock him up a few days later. Watch it here
