How to spot a solar scam

South Africans in the market for solar and backup energy products can follow a few important steps to minimise the chances of buying an underperforming, dangerous, or non-existent system.

The frequency and high intensity of load-shedding in the past few months have left many more households looking for affordable backup power systems.

-Check domain registration date compared to how long the website claims to be in business for.
-Check customer reviews and compare to domain registration date.
-if it's 2 good 2 be true......
-Do research on You Twit Face(youtube, twitter, facebook)
-Check hellopeter
-check physical on google maps
-check number on truecaller

Two important things"
a) Reviews mean nothing in this industry. Suppliers are bad-mouthing each other in reviews and they use fake reviewers to up their scores.
b) Registration with any authority/council only means that they are legit as far as their rights to install and certify. It does not speak to their level of service and if things go south it is costly and time-consuming to get it sorted via arbitration.

So at the end of the day, consumers in this market are left to the sharks and it is a game of Russian Roulette.

But there are good guys out there, it is just not that easy to find them and hope that all the money did not make them go over to the dark side.

Tips to avoid solar power scams

Well. This only took like forever.
These scams going on for ages already.

Tip #1

Join the ANC, become someone "important" and let the tax payers sort it out for you

What if the scam is the ANC fabricating threats of 'grid-crashing levels of loadshedding' this winter?

I mean, the ANC managed to dupe me into getting 2 Covid vaccines..

When it comes to solar I will only work with people/companies that has referrals.

ie:
On installation: I want to see/speak to at least 3 properties you have done some time ago.
On purchase: I will only deal with companies that I or people I know dealt with.

Personally avoid newcomers like the plague... ow wait, people, don't avoid those.
Let's just say I don't deal with new names, period.

I know there's a thread somewhere listing verified companies etc, just can't find it.

Anyone at all familiar with Morzart Solar house in Upington. Considering making an online purchase but a bit hesitant..
