So me and my wife both took out TM contracts 2 years ago which is about to expire in a months time.
We took the contracts as at the time we received 5GB of TM a month on the smartplan100.. which has been awesome ever since.

We both since bought new handsets and was planning on keeping the contacts on a month to month basis as we have no need for a new handsets and want to continue to benefit from the 5GB data deal.

So I popped into a Telkom store recently and was told that:

1. Once the 24months are over the 5GB of data we used to get will fall away and we will be automatically be charged for a 5GB bundle.

2. I cant renew my contract without taking a new handset... Aka SIM only contact. So we can't even move to the `new` smartplan100 deals without paying for a device...

So this basically leaves us with canceling the contracts altogether ... Which I didn't really want to do as TM performance has always been great and had no other issues. #toutchwood

Any suggestions? Is the above even correct or was the shop being deurmekaar again...

The same thing happened to my cellc contract, my data just disappeared when they switched me to month to month.

Seems like thats the way they roll.

It wouldn't surprise me. Have you tried buying a service from their site? You can complete a request but nothing happens. No calls or emails. I won't be switching to TM any time soon.

I'm not sure if those consultants really know what's going on. They told me that my 10gb promo will go back to the original price of R999 I think it was and not stay on R199 when it went on month to month.

That said, I too have a cellphone contract with 5gb data and also waiting to see what happens when I reach month 25. Which should be the next billing cycle.

I have a feeling it will stay the same.

Was considering taking a telkom mobile contract, the operator said I would have to do it in-store. Took one look at the long queues of miserable faces, another look at the hostile robotic staff and ditched that plan. Went with me& you which is totally online.

Sadly I also had to give up my 5gb of data. I'd would have be out of contract next month. Iwas told that I could go month to month, but would move to the standard smart plan 100, with only 1gb. They said that the 5gb deal was a promo, and is not available at all now. I've now up(down)graded to a new smartplan 100 with 1gb and a new phone.

Just convert to pay as you go. Data us hardly expensive with TM.

Same with me, they phone me , and I order new phone via telephone. [wifi unlimited]

Exact same thing happened to me in September.

Had 1.1GB data left for the month, next morning receive an sms saying I'm OOB by R250, checked data manager on my phone which confirmed that I used around about 200mb that morning, checked data balance and everything was gone, the entire 1.1GB according to Cell C.

My data disappeared and they charged me OOB for using data which I already paid for...

I did my upgrade by phone too, the stores in PE are worse than useless. I'll be using the wifi more from now on, I used to use my university's network before. Telkom is also running a promo at the moment, smart plan 100 contracts get 15gb of data each month until 31 March.

So me and my wife

*My wife and I. Telkom don't like incorrect grammar.

Ironically my wife and I also got them. At the time we took cheap phones and then sold them. We going to do the same now.

I upgrade December and she upgrades January next year.

I was on the 15gig sim only data plan, I was paying R249, at month 25 they charged R999, I reversed the debit order and cancelled the contract, the customer retention called to find out why I was cancelling the contract.. Told them I can't afford it, they moved me to the 10gig + 10gig month to month plan.. For R199,

Thanks for the grammar lesson.

My wife decided to upgrade over the weekend as she's fine with the new 1GB of data. I'm not too sure yet so holding out a bit!

Luckily I have a Dual SIM phone so will most probably let my contract run out and then go prepaid. Will use Axxess/Afrihost data till something better comes along! Telkom might just, come up with a similar promo I could go with for another 2 years.
