...so herein lies the question ati 48x0 (havokish) or 2x0gtx (physx)

relooking at the 48x0 i must say its really looking good, but should that be best for the long run or rather 2x0gtx for physics implementation.

another when/who are selling the 4870 ?, whats the best offer we currently can get for 4850 ? (thinking like oc/xxx additions)

I dont think you should worry about it... Its just a gimmick

But if you do, depends on what games you play... I know that the Steam (Half Life2) engine uses the HAVOK physics engine...

hmmm can't really decide yet which one, but i think the physics anyways needs more maturation first as for example cude just got the physx api implemented.

+1
Ageia never made it with PhysX, and I think Nvidia is going to be the same

Most developers will be able to add physics into the game without some fancy PhysX hardware, Havock is in Source bassed games and it works with ATI & Nvidia!

still not sure if i should bet again on ati.

Who cares about Havok or Physx?

It all comes down to price vs. performance for me. I was supporting the green team for years but the time has come to the move over to the red side. According to non official benchmarks released this morning , the Radeon 4870HD is on par with the GTX 260 and will cost a lot less. Nvidia was way too arrogant about the “we only do high end GPU’s for the enthusiast” at prices that only a few can afford.
Let us wait till tomorrow to see who will come out on top as the 4850 already proved to be winner.

Here's the deal with these implementation: The power needed to do physics calculations needs to come from somewhere.

So if this is left for your single GPU to do both GFX and physics then surely this will cost you in FPS? For this to be practical, you'll need 2 of the cards, which is still well out of reach of many gamers.

With Dual & Quad Cores becoming the norm, would devs stick to one exclusive platform or would they rather code for the generic solution (plain old multithreading)?

The best priced 4850 I've seen in SA is going for R2399 @ landmark. No OC/XXX editions have caught my eye to date. You will have to give it some time before we'll be seeing those kinds of cards.

I would go with PhysX and here is the reason:

GeForce 8 GPUs to acquire PhysX support via software download

by Darren Murph, posted Feb 15th 2008 at 8:39PM

Good news for folks with a GeForce 8 GPU and lots of questions about how the recent Ageia acquisition would affect them: your current card will be receiving PhysX support. When NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was questioned in a recent conference call, he noted that the firm was currently "working towards the physics-engine-to-CUDA port," and it could be delivered as "a software update" to every card that's CUDA-enabled (read: all of the GeForce 8 GPUs). Sadly, the bigwig still wouldn't say when to expect the release of the first PhysX port, but we really can't imagine it taking too awfully long now.

So how many of those games FULLY utilise the use of PhysX? So much that it actually makes a difference in-game?

Also, Havok have over 150 games starting from way back in 2000 and 3D Studio Max uses Havok for its physics calculations.

Point is; its still a gimmick until it actually affects gameplay and is required to play the game.

Now more than 300 games support Havok. And ATI also optimize their chip/driver for Havok.

Another plus for PhysX is that it is easier to implement in a game than Havok as far as I have picked up. But this won't influence my decision of what card to get come August/September...

heres the deal.... we meet to have gpus "fall of the truck"...
