Would any of you say gaming is a good idea or bad idea on a LCD screen? I'm looking at buy either a 19" LCD or CRT, but don't know if it will support gaming...its what I use my PC for mostly:D

I have a Geforce 7900GT so there should not be a prob?

i have a 19" lcd - works gr8 4 me - and i only play games :)

The only thing that I don't like about LCD screens is that their max resolution seems a bit pitiful for their price.

It's all find and dandy having a 19" monitor, but it's kinda poofie if it can't go higher than 1024 x 768.

got a 19" lcd at 1280x1024 perfect for me. :D but can ghost a little in FPS like FEAR. Viewsonic 191s

The CRTs can go higher rez but i found they hurt my eyes more and anyways my GPU is getting old and can't run on higher rez.... ATI 9800XT

I also have a LCD(VS191s) and yes it does ghost in FPS games.
If you ask me, rather buy a 21" CRT for games.

I must admit I'm dissapointed with my screen concerning games and the ghosting it has. At least I don't play that much games so it tolerable.

Those who believe LCD's can match CRT's are kidding themselves. LCD's are the 'cool' thing, yes, but nowhere near the quality of a good CRT. Unless of course you talk about something like the Iiyama or NEC Professional LCD's (minimum R10k for a 19" etc.)

I agree. What I don't get is people say that this and that LCD does not ghost and they can play games just fine etc(Onraji post).
Are they just not so sensitive to see the ghosting? Or maybe they are in denial rofl.

Yak, the standard 19" LCD res is 1280x1024 ..hell, I think that's even true for the 17" models! ..and yes, your 7900GT should get you right up there in the eye-candy stakes ;)

I recently bought a Viewsonic Professional Series LCD. Its VP930b. Its an MVA panel, so the quality of color reproduction is unmatched. All I can say is, i WILL NEVER GO BACK TO CRT! Things are so clear and crisp on this monitor. The first week I was just looking at the letters in IRC and going WOW!

There is no ghosting or lag in the display in even the fastest of FPS games (And I have been gaming for years, playing all the FPS games). Its rubbish that we have to look at R10000 LCD's like xenithon said. Just as long as the refresh rate is under 8ms or so, and its a good brand like Viewsonic, Dell, BenQ...etc then you wont have any problems, and games will be smooth.

The problem is that people buy these CHEAP CRAPPY LCD's, that are meant for OFFICE use, like sending e-mail and doing MS Word, and they think it should be awesome in games, but then it streaks and ghosts. Duh! You have to specifically buy an LCD for Gaming! Like Viewsonics X range.

The only problem LCD's have is that their refresh rate isnt as high as CRT monitors. My LCD can only do 75hz at 1280 x 1024. So its not AS SMOOTH as a CRT.

The only time you really need a CRT is for professional / competitive gaming. Everyone else will do just fine and be very happy with a nice 19" LCD Screen.

bdt, yeh, some of them, but then you have to fork out quite a bit of money where a similar 19" CRT would cost you half the price. Yes, LCDs are cool, but I don't think they're "practical" yet, for lack of a better word.

Yak, I hear ya re the cost/*perceived* benefit disparity between CRT & LCD. But it all depends on what one wants: a comparitively cheaper 19" CRT that's a real mission to carry around, or the significantly more co$tly LCD that one can carry without pulling a poepstring!

Still would go for LCD the benifits vs the draw backs.

Ghosting is only bad in FEAR cuz there is alot of black, BF2 and the like there is not enough to even notice during the high speed game, sure the guys who like only CRT will be like "But i can see some" but for the most of the open minded of us it will be nothing. And any ways the sharpness of the images like text is brilliant not to mention how much easier it is on your eyes.

Movies, i cannot see any ghosting. none.

Oh and just incase u do what i did, u have to have the screen on the recomended rez and refresh rates to get the most out of the screen.

Mine 1280x1024 at 60Hz anything other than that will increase ghosting.

Low response time and DVI connectors are the thing to look for with an LCD. 12ms downwards shouldn't ghost (but some manufacturers only post grey to grey response) but look for reviews of that particular moniter. LCD isn't worth it unless you are going to use DVI, much sharper image than anything a CRT can produce.

Yeah o LCD but go pro LCD and dont muck about with the entry stuff.
I'm currently using a Fujitsu Siemens 19" LCD ad I can tell you its a lot easier on the eyes than my previous 19" CRT when it comes to text. And I spend alot of time reading on my PC so that's important to me.

But having said that, CRT is still superior when it comes to Video and games I think.
With video its more obvious as the CRT can produce a far more natural picture than standard LCD/ with a better spot profile, and a much better gamma gradient than LCD. And you don't have to worry about Ghosting at all.
I've had a pro grade Phillips Brilliance 1710 17" CRT with Component (including Sync) connectors. I've still not seen better better colour re-production than on that monitor. Granted the refresh rate was low at 72Hz (1280x1024) but the accuracy of the colour production was unmatched by any LCD I've seen so far. (Save for the Sony/Samsung CAD LCDs).

I also have a 19" Tatung VM9G Monitor. It is not as good as the phillips and is close to the LCD I'm using currently except that it has a very high refresh rate and obviously no ghosting at 1280x1024 85Hz or 1600x1200 75Hz

If I was in the market for a really great CRT, I'd go for the Sony Trinitron 21" CRT with component inpuit and support for 2.5Kx1.6K screen size at 75Hz. Forgot model name but saw one in action showing high def 720p NASA video and I was convinced again that CRT is going to be my weapon of choice for some time to come. It isn't cheap at 3.5K (used to be 5~7K) but If I was going CRT I'd go this route. The CRT is made for professional editing so it has all the features etc, driver disc with colour profiles etc...

To get similar quality from an LCD you'll need to pay in the region of 10K.
You could though go with the Dell 24X7 displays which are rather great. Won't match the CRT but will make up for it in size and format (Widescreen)
And besides 21"CRT weighs 20Kg! :/

So I'm sayin' if you want CRT, go proper, if LCD go big. The biggest thing LCD has going for it is size and weight. (ALso, you never have to worry about glare at all)

When I would consider LCD?

When these became mainstream :D

- Drool: 2048 x 1536 native resolution (~US$4k)
- Ultra Drool: 3840 x 2400 native resolution (~ US$9k)

Thank you for all the input! I still don't know which one to get, but it looks like I might go for a CRT monitor... Gaming is my highest priority at the moment for my PC and I would like to get the best out of my graphics card.

Hey, if you're going to go for CRT, maybe check out that guy selling the 19" Philips monitor? Sure, it's got some time on the clock, but it IIRC is a pro/better than arb grade screen ..maybe worth thinking about?
