To LCD or not to LCD?

have a LCD for gaming for over 3 years now and recently upgraded to a 19" 8ms BenQ.

i am never going back to CRT's for gaming, i already got used to my LCD gaming thus dont notice ghosting or whatever issues people bring up or look for in their buys.

as for refresh rates, LCD and CRT refresh rates are not comparable coz they are different technologies. ;)

What cracked me up during Rage was all the people carrying Pick & Pay trolleys to get their PC's and CRT's into the dome. It just makes it so much easier to carry a LCD under one arm and your PC in the other. :p
 
yea but we get better quality once set up :)

no ghosting no lcd non sense

and i never use a trolley to carry a monitor
do you think that shaking is good for a monitor you will ppl :)

It's a case of looking at the pros and cons. Currently, 95% of people want an LCD. It's basically a case if they can afford it or not.

An my R4000 Viewsonic VP912 has got a far better picture than my Philips Briliance 19" that cost me almost R3000. So I simply cant agree with your statement that LCD's can't match the quality, although I do agree that you do need to spend a bit more money than most people are spending to get a good one. R3500 I think is the minimum for a good 19".
 
Got a Dell 19" - haven't seen any ghosting at all, Half-Life 2 is beautifully crisp and playing at 1280x1024 like a dream - fantastic stuff.

I'd never go back to a CRT.

It took me a while to get used to how bright LCD screens can be, but they are definately easier on the eye once you are used to them.

My only concern is cleaning the screen and oh yeah, one other funny thing which worries me ...

At work, when people are checking out other peoples work, gathered around the computer, they are so used to touching the screen with a finger or a pen when explaining, it's irritating when they do the same on my LCD - I had to clean a bunch of light pencil marks of the damn thing, after one of the sales people got a little over excited about pointing various things out on my screen.


New CRT sales here in the UK are virtually non-existent.
 
lol, those people that see ghosting on the new pro LCD models need to go to a doctor to lower their seeing rate a bit :D

haven't seen any ghosting as yet here on dell ultrasharp 17" ...

only bad thing about LCD nowadays is the crap black! But it is clearly visible only on predominantly black screen and dark room, so it is not such a biggie, but still quite annoying ... other than that, LCD is the way to go!

My pet hate. I have to bite down hard to stop myself from grabbing a finger and bending it backwards :mad:

I still haven't decided yet! LOL. There are just so many people saying YES and others saying NO...confusing rather!

I'll see what happens next month and maybe get that 19" LCD with 2ms response time...

I was in the same dillema .... went ahead and bought the LCD 4ms response ... very happy with it .....

Yes , as with all pc hardware .. you can wait till the latest and greatest comes out .... but I say stuff that ... go for something that is affordable and will keep for 2 years .... if it has a 3 year guarantee .. you can flog it off easily and upgrade....

Or buying an 15" at special and next week they advertise the 17" which you actually wanted at special. :mad:
 
I got a 17" Samsung Syncmaster with only an 8ms response time but i have never had any ghosting that i could see. So if there is no ghosting go for lcd its so much more portable and takes up less desk space.
 
The response time of monitors advertised is a load of k@k. The 2ms panels perform worse than a Viewsonic 8ms panel. The reason for this is the use of overdrive technology, which does help in certain situations, but is often over-used but manufacturers to just market their product.

due to this, it is worth much more to get an awesome 8ms panel that actually delivers 8ms accross the range of both black-to-white and grey-to-grey transitions rather than getting a pannel that can do a black-to-white in 2ms, but takes 30ms to do a grey-to-grey...

The latency of the panel that is stated by manufacturers is only the latency of black-to-white. This is usually the lowest latency. Much more important is graph of latency and how consistent it is.

I recently sold one to a client. Best quality image in price range IMO. just don't use it with a bright object behind you.

Should sell for about R3000. Just to make sure you don't get ripped off.
O and the acual response time for this monitor is closer to 16ms with is pretty good for this price range. You won't notice any ghosting.
 
I agree fully with Mic_y.

The response time stats are about as accurate as a municipal utility bill.

The best advice I can give, is completely IGNORE THE RESPONSE TIME SPECS. Best thing to do is to read reviews and stay away from the cheap brands like BenQ. Also stay away from the entry level models of every brand. They are only OK for office use.

Go for Viewsonic, Samsung or Acer (remember, mid and high range models only)
