Hey all

I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to whether i should upgrade now or wait.
I'm considering upgrading to a full intel i7 1366 platform, the 950 specifically with the asus rampage III mobo and 6gb of corsair ram - which will cost me roughly R9500. I have an enermax 650 psu and the HD5970 GFX, so i'm sorted in those fronts. I will be upgrading from an amd dual core 4800.

My problem comes in is that should i wait because of the announcement of intels new Sandybridge cpu releases early next year. It will be coming in 1156 platform with a new chipset and stuff so i cannot upgrade to a new cpu. Also, i'm not sure if intel will be continuing the 1366 platform, that is releasing a cheaper hex-core version or increasing clock speeds and what n'not.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks all.

to correct you it will be coming in a socket 1155 and not 1156

It is a bit of a strange time to be upgrading, both AMD and Intel are about to make their next socket... Look, you wont go wrong with that upgrade, but I would personally try and hold off since the new sockets are just around the corner.

I will say though that R9500 is a bit steep, you should look at cutting back on your motherboard imo. Unless you foresee having two top end GPUs from Nvidia in your future.

Thanks archer, perhaps i should try to hold off, as R10k is a lot to spend on a previous gen pc platform. I hope that the new prices would be roughly the same to my upgrade spec can remain the same.
And as to the mobo, i tend to go for the best mobo i can afford as it really is the backbone of one's system, and provides future upgrade options.
Thanks for the advice.

Going highend 1366 or AM3 isnt a bad thing. Only if you plan to upgrade. Since you still have an AMD 4800+ is clear you dont upgrade but rather buy a new system instead.

I say get the 950 or 1090T. Both will last you a long long time.

Vega ... I am in the same dilemma as you ... but I currently have the 3800 amd dual core :)
I am most likely going to wait for the new chipset from intel .... although ... must admit ... the recent drop in price of the 950 has got me
wanting to upgrade sooner ... so just have to exercise some restraint :)

why not keep your pc and spend your upgrade money on a console. pc people spend so much on performance increases that it's rarely justified it in the end. be carefull about the bull**** intel and amd offers for free.

LOL...:wtf: you can do much more on a pc

Ive got the same problem. Im stuck on this Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86ghz CPU. Im going to wait for Sandybridge since I only upgrade once in a blue moon. Buying Core i7 now is crazy. If u want a nehalem core wait for sandybridge to release and see the prices drop of nehalem ;)

I am glad I saw this. Forgot that this is always the time new technology comes out and I usually buy a new PC (which I was going to do tomorrow) and then new tech comes out and suddenly the parts I purchased are now worth a whole lot less. I was going for the LGA1156 Core i5 760, with 4GB of DDR3-1600 RAM. Should I be waiting for Sandybridge to see how prices go?

why does everyone think that adding so much ram will help improve performance. why do you need 6GBs of ram, honestly its a waste.

You know my system specs is as follows.

P5N32SLI PLUS
2.13 GHZ Core 2 Duo E6420 overlocked to 3.0GHZ
GTX 275 1792 Ram
4GBs of Kingston Dual channel Memory DDRII 800

And Guess what it can still game perfectly.
Its not to say the latest technology will improve your performance.
Focus on getting the right motherboard then work from there.

All depends on what you're going to do with the RAM. I will probably upgrade to 8GBs of RAM because I don't only game. I run a lot of applications which will use massive amounts of RAM. I test a lot of web apps on my desktop before they go live on a server machine, I do CAD work, video and photo manipulation.

If you're only going to be playing games, then 3GB of RAM should suffice.
I'm doing software development and running multiple virtual machines, so then even 4GB of RAM isn't enough!

Also, if you have the money to fork out on a Socket 1366 system, then you might as well get 6GB of RAM too.

Wait! once sandybridge comes out you can buy a better pc for the same price because of the pricecuts of nehalem

Who said anything about RAM? OP only mentioned 6gb since LGA1366 works in triple channel and 3x2gb makes the most sense. And should the OP use other programs too then4gb can get eaten up very quickly. Just yesterday photoshop felt like using 3.8gb all on its own, so the 6gb in the i7 PC really did help me out.

Problem is I need a system within the next month and Sandy Bridge only comes out in Q1 2011
