To Webafrica and Openweb

well... whoever can get a decent LOCAL only package from IS , is about to receive a HELL of a lot of customers and support.

PS: when i say decent.... i dont mean r130 for 30gigs, but unfortunately thats the best atm.
 
Even i decent price for somewhere between 80 - 120gigs doesnt have to be uncapped.. I would say the average high end user uses prob closer to the 80gig mark.. But i use to use 120gigs..

i agree. 80GB is a decent amount really. Many people wont be able to come close to this amount, but then it is not them at whom this service would be targeted.
 
Anyhoe.. I dont think anything will happen on this situation till telkom does something which as we all know could take another 4years.. No lies on that one.

We do realise there is a demand for this. However the reason it doesn't exist yet is because of economics. 1% of users doing 70% of your traffic is definitely not a lucrative market - even if there is strong demand. Believe me these are accurate figures, I've seen the stats.

100GB of local is actually going to cost at least R1500 for the ISP but most likely more. If you talking international / local then its more like R5000 p/m. That's where overselling comes in, but even so then the majority of your users need to be very low consumption users to be able to take a loss on the high bandwidth ones.

The only way this is going to change (and it is definitely starting to happen) once we see LLU kicking in. There has been a lot of talk over the last 10 years, but I'm seeing daily new signs that its all underway. The landscape is going to change very rapidly over the next 3 years and can't wait to start innovating even more in the new environment.
 
You can't oversell a product which you know is going to be used to its full capacity.

ISPs would make a huge loss, because the only people who would buy large-size local-only accounts would be users who are going to use ALOT of transfer (ie. accounts which can't be oversold).

This is unfortunate, but its reality. That said, I can't see how R242 for over 60GB of data transfer is unreasonable?

That is unfortunate yes, but I understand where you guys are coming from.

R242 would be great - the problem is it is only local, which limits one immensely as to what you can do with it and kind of circumvents the world-wide nature of the internet.

You may get something like this if IS got a WiMax license, then they would not have to pay the IP Connect fees. The crazy thing is that all over the world, the company offering the ADSL service are the ones that pay the IP Connect fees. Here, Telkom offer the ADSL service and IS pay the IP Connect fees.
 
Local uncapped

If you really think about it we don't need IS to give nice uncapped local packages because we are all already paying Helkom a huge monthly fee for this adsl line and if you look at what you paying them per year for this line there making a killing and instead of allowing for uncapped local they try to squeeze more blood out of there users ( I wonder why we don't like them)

So I wouldn't pay R100 per month for something I'm actually already paying for each month, not to mention the mandatory phone line rental you have to pay that brings the total on home 384kb up to R350 per month for adsl usage only time I'm using the Helkom phone is to call support because you know you gonna have to wait at least 30 minutes before you actually get through and then you hope you have dailed the right no or else you in for another 30 minutes of waiting.

Mr. G... how do you manage to do 43Gigs local? With the IS news server that slow where do you find other local content?

i'm 20 gigs into my second account, capped at 35 on my first account, wondering if i'll need a third account... :(
i wouldn't be surprised if IS starts charging separately for news server access once local bandwidth becomes free
 
Got Capped at 52 GB...i must say it sucks...I'll have to choose wisely now what to download. I have a webafrica account but they don't allow topups on 30 GB local accounts? wtf so i opened a openweb account too. Works out expensive though R130 for WA and R230 for OpenWeb with openbrowse. will check out openbrowse to see if it works for me. Anyway were #@$#@ if we don't get bigger that 30 GB accounts soon.

just switched to openweb myself. they allow 30GB local accounts on a month to month basis.

will keep you guys posted as to how strict the capping is, although i have a suspicion that IS upgraded their usage tracking.
