Toilets built without walls

Firstly, it is astounding that the council agreed to build toilets without walls more than it is that the people agreed o this rubbish. For starters, using a toilet in public in full view of everybody is against the law (indecent exposure and all that), so, by the council building these toilets, the council is complicit in the authorisation of a criminal act. Therefore, the council should've thought it through and not done something so ridiculously embarrassing in the first place.

The council built the toilets but was NOT obliged to do so. They did that anyway. The second bit is nonsense because they did not authorise their use. The built the plumbing, supplied the water and then the community would probably have to chip in to do the rest. They never said they should expose themselves.

It's uncivilised, unfair and utterly ridiculous that the council would subject these painfully poor people to such shoddy treatment. Even the xenophobia tent camps had toilets so why treat citizens of this country any different.

No. These people, I've been told, have houses elsewhere in Cape Town or have houses in the Eastern Cape. This is info from people who live in Gugs and established parts of Khaya who don't want them there either. Secondly they had got something and something is better than nothing. Its definately not uncivilised.

I'm also highly annoyed at the ignorance and insensitivity of some myBB forumites as government is trying to create a semblance of an equitable platform within South Africa so that a certain minority does not benefit into perpetuity while everybody else must fend for themselves on the scraps.

I'm annoyed by insensitive and ignorant guys like you who don't know the facts.
When White South Africans were gifted with free education, reserved jobs, plush homes for a pittance and a whole lot more, I didn't see anybody objecting, so when "these" people are being given basic services in order to bring them up to acceptable levels of common humanity, I am all for it.

The Whites who got jobs on the railroad, Post office, shipyards etc - well there are now mostly AA candidates in those jobs and in the civil service. So that has been equilised. The white govt did not build toilets for poor whites.

To think otherwise is to remain ignorant of reality...I suggest you visit www.thevenusproject.com and broaden your narrow, self-serving mindset a bit.

We are not going to get anywhere if everybody is just going to sit and wait for handouts from the government. The counsel agreed to give the toilets for FREE all they had to do is to enclose them. Is that to much to ask? It is time the community get of their bums and start to pitch in. This sense of entitlement is getting us nowhere.

I know they are poor but they will never get out of the cycle if they are not prepare to help them self.

This is not about race, if a white community acted like this, my reaction would be the same.

The situation has prompted the ANC Youth League to lodge a complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), saying what was happening was "tantamount to crimes against humanity".

"Our plea to the [SAHRC] is to compel the city council to build toilet walls to ensure the rights, dignity, privacy and freedom of residents of Ward 95 are protected, to charge the council with violations of human rights and to take it to task for disregarding the constitution and the Bill of Rights," said ANCYL deputy chairperson in the Dullah Omar region, Chumile Sali.

Is it just me or are we hearing less about the ANC and more about their youth league ?

As for reserved jobs, PeterCH has set you straight on that one but free education? Plush homes for a pittance? Ha! Well this is news to me! Why the hell didn't my folks cash in on this deal?!

Maybe he means the free education you got in the army, and the free housing given to railway employees etc...

The DA must realise from this that it is much more difficult to administer a Government than their shallow minded attitude allows them to believe.

The ANC can use some of their Hitachi money to build walls for the people, maybe then next time round they will be able to win the Western Cape.

Agreed, these people are lazy and have to high a sense of entightlement. It is not the DA's fault the ANC promises everything for free, but provides nothing. Now the DA has to step in an provide what should have been provided by the ANC. If these people are now to lazy or to stupid to put up some sort of covering, I say let them carp in the bush. Seeing as how there is already cover provided.

I suggest you do the same! Stop believing all this idiotic ANC propaganda, white people were given the opportunity but it weren't for free.

IIRC black people also had the chance at education, Bantu education is still better than no education, but somehow the schools burned down :o

Still it always amazes me when some ignorant people think we got plush homes for almost nothing yet there are so many white people that live in such small homes.

Saw on the news that the CT government is going to provide building materials as well, they just have to put it up!

if it werent for the white man coming to SA, you wouldnt have had the level of infrastructure etc, prior to this government screwing it up.
Zim, Mozambique, Angola etc etc all come to mind.

Wow! See how everyone defends the authorities in this case?
Is that because the culprits are DA? Surely not! This is just citizenry holding their elected officials to account:D

These toilets are still being built, they are a work in progress, residents are just making a noise for nothing, the contractor is just waiting for the order and shipment for these special walls: http://hackedgadgets.com/2006/08/11/mirror-public-toilet/

My guess is either they got these cool walls installed the wrong way around or they still putting them up... these guys are so lucky :D
