Imagine losing your olympic medal because someone else in your team used banned substances...

Speaking before the Tokyo Games, Ujah had revealed how Zen Buddhism and morning meditation had helped him to return close to his best in 2021 after an underwhelming few years since 2017, during which he had won both the Diamond League title and a 4x100m world championship gold medal.

“Since January I have listened to a lot of podcasts and an audiobook which is just looking at Zen Buddhism, that state of meditation. Those are things I’m kind of into and it’s helping me. It’s about remaining calm in situations where it may not be so calm. This is the most confident I’ve ever felt in my track career.”

Buddhism and meditation huh? :X3:

My friend was in the trials for the men's water polo team (he plays for the OJ Eagles) and well, based on their performances, you can tell that they had spent 60-years away from the Olympics. They came under a lot of fire on social media for the massive beatings they took but at the end of the day these were people with full-time jobs that train when they all have the time to get together and self-funded all of their own travel and training expenses. Just no way in hell they would cope with professional, full-time teams at the Olympics. This goes for every sport not cricket, rugby and soccer. The rest of the federations limp by on scraps.

Quoted from the OJ Eagles FB page.

Some interesting perspectives from former OJ Eagles player and SA women's Assistant Coach Duncan Woods, on the performance of our Water Polo Teams at the Tokyo Olympics.

"Just to help with some perspective…

There has been a lot of talk about the performance of the South African Olympic waterpolo teams, so some perspective is always helpful.

Every single Rand and cent up to departing for the Olympic Games was self-funded by the players and every hour of the staff was volunteer, after-hours, work.

The saying “you get what you pay for” applies. No support and investment = No results.

Compare this to a similar team sport eg. British hockey who were funded R262 Million in their build up to the Olympics. See article attached. That makes the discrepancy, well…around R262 Million.

We as a waterpolo community want better results and will do all we can to improve over the next 3 years to Paris 2024, but in reality this picture will not change, unless the circumstances change. We are also from a tough, resilient nation. But we also can’t be sent in again like lambs to the slaughter.

Waterpolo has become an incredibly popular sport in schools in South Africa over the last 20 years. That has been an organic groundswell. But that now needs to flow into a quality senior programme, and that needs funding and quality management.

If you have ideas or want to help, feel free to get in touch.

*note: This is sadly not unique to waterpolo -most SA Sport Federations have similar challenges." Duncan Woods

Awesome stuff. They told her to keep her medal.

Am I the only one who can’t watch the Paralympics? I just feel kinda sad watching these tremendous athletes competing with their different disabilities.
