Hi all.

I'm going to Kuala Lumpur in February and from there I want to go to either Tokyo or Seoul. Anyone been to either of these cities? Any recommendations?

Also i'm transiting in Dubai, i can choose how many days to stay there. Will 3 days in Dubai be sufficient?

edit : I realise that both Tokyo and Seoul are very expensive cities.

Dunno, you might want to make your transit in Dubai as short as possible, hours.

you must post some pics of Samsung and kia factory. If you put it on facebook pm me please.

I've been to Seoul.

It rules, it is very clean and safe. By safe I mean you can walk around by yourself at 2 in the morning and not worry about anything happening to you. Like Tokyo it is very futuristic, just not as much neon. Be prepared though for insane humidity (up to 100%), it took me several days to get used breathing such heavy air. There are some old Korean Castles on the outskirts of the city you can take a look at so it's not all concrete jungle.

The people are very friendly but not all speak English and most of the signs are in Korean so it may be quite difficult getting around if you don't have a guide/don't understand a bit of Korean. The cabs are quite convenient and even have cellphones in them so you can talk to an operator in English, who will then translate for the driver.

Seoul also isn't that far from the border so you can take a bus to the DMZ. Another reason to go to Seoul.

The otaku in me says go to Tokyo however but if you're not a Japanophile either one is fine.

Side Note: For the love of God DO NOT eat Korean KFC  You'll be sorry

Actually it depends most on Air Asia flights and availability. Right now it's looking like it will be Tokyo from 7-12 February.

Tokyo without a doubt. Language is a barrier but you'll have a blast.

Two are very different countries.
Korea vs Japan

As or any other foreign country...learn a few of the basic words but both Korea and Japan are very English orientated.
Just brush up on your culture and customs especially for Japan.

Thanks guys. I gather not many people from MyBB have been to that side of the world :P

I've decided on Tokyo. Going to be Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Tokyo and Singapore.

If you want to learn about Japanese culture a trip to Kyoto might also be worthwhile. If you visit Tokyo you might enjoy Akihabara, Asakusa, Ginza, Roppongi etc. Personally I enjoy Hong Kong more than Tokyo. Tokyo is very expensive and difficult to get around unless you can read Japanese. You may struggle just to find your way back to your hotel at night. The electronic equipment that is on sale is aimed solely at the Japanese market so there isn't much that will be of interest to you. Language is always going to be a big problem as most of the locals cannot understand any English.

This virtual tour should give you a better idea about the Kyoto gardens and temples ...

If you do go to tokyo, using the subway is a blast. Most of the school kids speak some english and are normally very willing to help. Whilst in Tokyo a visit to the Imperial palace is a must. Another trip that is good is a trip on the bullet train. Vist to Mt Fuji is also recommended as is Kyoto. Wonderful, extremely busy city. The Ginza has about three levels underground. Not a good place to buy electronics, save that for Singapore. In Singapore make sure you viist Simlin Tower for electronics. Enjoy the trip.

How difficult is it to get around Tokyo without knowing any Japanese? Are street signs all in Japanese etc? I'm only in Tokyo for 4 days so doubt i'll be able to visit Kyoto.

Totally agree with this. There is nothing in the Middle East worth hanging around there for. You wanna get in and out of there as quickly as possible. I hate stopping over in the Middle East when I fly.

Ask hotel to write out address etc in Japanese as well as points you want to visit. I relied on subway when I was there. Street signs can be confusing, but just ask a schoolkid and they will normally, sometimes even taking you destination. English is part of japanese school curriculum. Also ask hotel for some basic tems, hello, thanks etc

Is approaching school kids in a foreign country a good idea :erm: I have 3 months to learn some basic Japanese or can just use a translator app on my phone.

A day is sufficient for Dubai. Go up the Burj and do some shopping, everything else can be done cheaper elsewhere.

Unless you are visiting a friend or family its not that fun. You pretty much need a guide.

Never been to Japan or Korea but I would rather be that side then stuck in Dubai for too long.

Damn, I'll be there for 3 days. I have a friend that side. As for shopping, I won't be doing much during my trip since i'm back-packing.

Ok... well very little is free in Dubai. Its worth checking out all the malls just to see how cool they are, that gets boring though. Go to Dragon mart and you can see all the cheap Chinese imports, I was tempted by a few things there.
Go to the Burj, yes it cost but its worth it, go at sunset and its even better.
I didn't go in to the desert but apparently there are somethings to do there.
Also go check out old Dubai.

Like Robertvv has said, please also pm me regarding pictures. I was telling my future girlfriend :) that the first overseas country or city I want to visit is Tokyo because of it's futuristic life.
