Toll fees slashed

People need to be liken the taxi drivers... go on the rampage...destroy **** (I'd start with the toll gates/camera's)

Thats how you get your way in South Africa, strike, destroy, etc... then you get handed what you want.

Government has decided to drop the toll-fees, but a charge of R2 per megabyte of data will be added across all networks and R4-50 per megabyte for ADSL, with a further R60 per month in the line rental to Telkom. The price of Vaseline will also increase by 20%, as it is a petroleum product.

March 7th is earmarked for a countrywide strike and I pray that EVERYONE strikes on that day and brings the whole country to a massive halt.

Time? It would make sense for everyone to strike at say 9am or something to gridlock the entire road network (block taxis too!)

I predict a lot of businesses moving to CT in the next few years - especially senior management, why:

1) cheap, fast internet - keep in touch with your minions via video conferencing (might even keep you out of the CT office!)
2) No pesky e-tolling (and way less traffic, if you want to stay fit use the cycle lanes when weather permits).
3) Its Cape Town! Drink more wine.

And still we have no answer as to why tax-exempt taxi's get a free ride while tax-payers must pay tolls.

Its to calm the workers, since they generally take part in strikes and Cosato

While driving on an improved N1 highway I was listening to 702 and once again that Botha guy was interviewed, this happen less than an hour ago. His name is Roelof Botha and he is an independent analyst.

I liked what he said, he said that when tackling this issue we should try and avoid being too emotive. Difficult to do but it's better to focus on facts than argue using emotions. He repeated what he said yesterday that paying through the toll roads mechanism is far better than paying through fuel levies. He also mentioned that the whole country (8 provinces) subsidizing one province (Gauteng) will not be fair and will not go down well with citizens if the fuel levy option is adopted.

He also stressed the fact that had the government not taken steps to legislate and approve the GFIP then Gauteng highways would not have improved and costs to businesses and consumers would today be far worse than they are today. He mentioned that there's still a lot of traffic on our highways, but if money was not spent to improve our highways then the situation now would be far, far worse.

The DA has challenged his findings, his response was that the DA hasn't read his report and are therefore making statements to score politically. He is basically challenging the the DA to read his report and take the debate from there.

Although Roelof Botha seems to be making a lot of sense, I couldn't help but be skeptical as to who commissioned him to do the study in the first place. Did some diggin on the web about his past and this is what I found
Director of GOPA Group SA (2005 project - Gauteng Provincial Transport Infrastructure Strategy); Economic advisor to Price Waterhouse Coopers for 17 years (PWC appointed unilaterally by the MEC to implement a “turnaround strategy” relating to the Strategic Public Transport Network for Gauteng & the Gautrain Concession Agreement.
Can someone confirm if the above is true or not? I found the above info from a comment posted by someone on the news24 website.

You do know the trucks pay tolls as well right? They also pay much than passenger cars.

I know and I agree, but the trucks that will be affected will be from which province mainly? Some trucks travel countrywide but how often do those trucks travel to Gauteng or end up in this province?

The toll fees will do the same, I think SANRAL sponsored him to say that.

That's possible.

We were meant to pay via the fuel levy, but to date there is absolutely bugger all information about how much of the project was funded through this. Your buds over at the ANC seem to be keeping it a closely guarded secret.

That's also possible, but if it was funded through fuel levies then how much of the GFIP cost was funded by the fuel levies.

They are not my buddies...........yet :D

And still we have no answer as to why tax-exempt taxi's get a free ride while tax-payers must pay tolls.

2 reasons, to get motorists to start using public transport (buses not taxis for people on this forum) and also because for someone earning R3000, being directly affected by the toll gate fees would be catastrophic for their basically non-existent budget. I personally know of people (grown up people) who earn less than R4000 a month and spend more than half of their salary on public transport (taxis) and food. So if they are affected what till they do? They will ask for salary/wage increases from their employers won't they? Which means small businesses will suffer a bit financially. Which means more strikes and disruption on the economy which means you and me will be indirectly affected by all this ...................... you know how it goes don't you?

People like me who are lucky enough to have a job and skills can be able to afford an extra R550 I think? We have to make adjustments on our finances though. Some of my friends drink every Friday and smoke everyday, surely if they cut down on their "sin" expenditures then a few cents would be freed so as to fund the R550?

I personally don't mind if taxi and bus users get a "free" ride on our roads. I don't mind subsidizing taxis and buses, even if the taxi driver will be ungrateful so much that he'll tailgate me :)

I know people don't care about the poor, but unfortunately they are people and subsidizing them (in a sustainable manner) is alright with me.

I do. If I travel on the highway it is to visit friends which doesn't generate an income. Why should somebody who is using the upgraded highways to generate a income not be liable to pay for that road they are using?

Political BS.

I earn a modest salary and my monthly "sin expenses" is taking the wife to Spur once a month (R300).
I simply don't have an extra R550 lying around that I'm willing to donate towards charity.
If I am forced to pay I will have to cancel the insurance on my financed vehicle.

I don't get paid to drive to work. Why should taxis be exempt - they don't even pay income tax!
Sorry but that is just leeching off the people who have money and I'm fed up with this socialism crap.
I've reached the point where I feel like downgrading my lifestyle so that I don't have to pay tax and can leech off others like the majority do. Why should I work hard when it's all taken away from me?

It's R550 this year, next year it will increase and the year after that ...
Soon we'll be paying R2000 per month for toll fees and the fuel levies will also just keep increasing.

Please can someone post more info on protest marches. I really want to take the day off and join in.

+1
I'll bring free Molotov cocktails.
Anyone willing to donate some old tyres that we can burn on the N1?

Where have you been hiding?
SANRAL have already indicated their intention to e-toll something like another 7 roads including a couple in Cape Town and Durban.
If it works in Gauteng then I will eat my hat it if it is not rolled out to all major metropolitan areas.
Cape Town and Durban's turn is coming ...

Quite correct. The people in other provinces should be supporting the protests in Gauteng lest the same happens to them.

article said:
toll fees for the improved freeways have been slashed and the National Treasury will be paying off R5.75 billion of the debt incurred in building them.

Ok National Treasury is taking some of the hit... and their funds come from where again?

5.75bn is less than half the cost of the toll collection mechanism. Ripoff much? 14bn those gantries cost...

Would the tolls be accepted if there was an absolute guarantee the money was going only for the development of infrastructure? Like no government involvement at all.

No

Currently something like 20% of government infrastructure spend is misappropriated somehow. We have already paid for these upgrades. The money was just stolen instead of going to sanral. Why should we pay twice?
