Toll road protest

I posted this in another thread and I honestly can't understand how educated people like yourselves can't put one and one together :confused:

It's simple ecconomics. If no one uses it because it's too expensive then they will have to drop the price. They will keep dropping the price till people start using the toll roads. Just don't use the toll roads till the rates are exceptable. It's pretty simple I think.

The internet does fsckall in terms of getting a response.

Toyi toying naked on the tolled highway way will get you exposure from the news networks ;)
 
80% of people will cough up and the remainder will go through your lovely suburbs to avoid toll-fees

Can you imagine the pressure on a single lane suburban road with thousands of cars!! It will be so bad that people would rather pay the tolls and get to work quickly than sit in traffic for a good few hours.

Can you imagine what a boost this is for small businesses on those routes?

There is many ways to look at a problem ;)

If you are going to drive the N1 and pay the toll fee's purely because you don't want to sit in traffic then no matter what they charge you will drive it. That is not the reason people are complaining ;) People who drive it everyday already says it's to much. There is only one way to force their hand. Don't drive on that road :p
 
Does anyone know the recipe for C4? Or semtex.. Think they'll drop the idea if the gantries keeps falling down..

If only 20% of motorists decide to take alternative routes then you'll still enjoy traffic jams ... at 66c/km.
I think this is going to make a bit more of a dent than 20%.
A huge portion of the middle class have bonds to pay, kids to feed and school, etc. and R500-R1000 is going to hurt them a lot.
I earn a reasonable salary (my wife works too) and I'm simply not willing to pay the toll fees (R600 in my case). That would mean cutting back to absolutely bare necessities (no eating out at all, no movies, no hobbies). Then all you're doing is working to survive (and make other people rich) and that is seriously depressing.

For those who's household income is R50K+ a month it won't make a huge difference.
R1K here or there isn't a big issue for people who have a couple of grand to spare at the end of the month.

However mark my words - there will be annual increases in toll fees in line with the interest rate so get ready for a steeper and steeper bill every year.

Problem is, avoid the highways and your 2hours of driving a day will become 4 hours of driving a day. Time is money. Time you could have spent being productive, being with family, doing what you want. I see Audible will become incedibly popular here in SA, and where possible companies might start considering keeping their people at home to work from there. Cheaper to get decent ADSL at home and work via that than driving in. Still think it is 4-5 times what it should be. For me I still have to add on the R6 or R11 toll gates on the Northern side of the city. Luckily my boss pays for it. If he makes me pay for it, I am moving on.

Impractical. People are lazy, and even though they'll complain, they'll still cough up the money, since it's easier that way. If you want to make a stand, then attack the source. This is supposed to be a fee proposed by the government, right? So why not use government to fight government? What do you think Helen Zille will say to this? Taxes are supposed to be used for maintaining the countries infrastructure, so why should we have to pay extra fees for roads, yet officials get to blow millions of rands on parties, trips around the world, and renaming roads and towns to make them sound more black.

This is why the South African people fail at just about every protest action they undertake. Pls don't bring politics into this. If Helen Zille was the ruling party she would have been 100% for the idea as it will be her government reaping the benefits. Don't be daft pls...
It's not impractical. just don't use the toll road then see what happens ;)
 
I see many rants and indignation about the tool roads, but haven't yet seen any real attempts at a solution ... which doesn't involve violence :D

Edit ... apart from finding alternate routes.

The thing for me is the congestion through the suburbs and the additional time I am going to be wasting (adding at least 25 to 30 mins if there are no accidents or major intersections out).

It'll last a few moths until government realises that following up on unpaid toll fees is a mamoth task in itself

There was talk last year of the City of Cape Town doing the same thing on our (only) 2 highways.

If it's the City of Joburg and/or SAP handling this thing, then we can all safely decline any invitation to pay, as neither (in the billing systems locally) would be able to organise a p!ss up in a brewery :D

And I saw on eNews tonight that there is talk of Durban and CT following SANRAL's tolling systems in Gauteng :mad:
