My daughter went to her Doc today with tonsillitis and after her appointment, she sent me an SMS stating;
"After R300 all he said was that I must Google salt water"

Did the doctor say "Google"?

You gargle with salt water.

And after R300 you should be grateful that he didn't prescibe any other expensive medicine.

Get a second opinion. Don't let your child live in pain due to an a-hole.

 If you can't say anything good, don't say it.

A-hole? Gargling with salt water (or disprin) is standard treatment for mild tonsillitis.

No. In her young mind she heard "Google" not "gargle". This is meant to be funny.

That's why I said get a second opinion. Who's to say it's not mild.

If it wasn't mild the child would have difficulty saying anything and a temperature close to 40 degrees

tonsillitis is a pretty simple thing for a doctor to diagnose. Besides, at R300 a pop how many opinions do you need for a sore throat?

Uhm what ? ... this is emergency room territory and close to inducing convulsions (febrile convulsions)

Firstly the doctor did the correct thing. You may use chlorhexidine mouthwashes as well. Most of the time people want medicines to take so they give you medicines.

A viral infection cannot be treated with antibiotics. They usually dismiss or start prophylaxis for secondary bacterial infection but he must have not deemed it necessary.

Second opinion when you barely know whats happening. Go spend another R300-R400 for the exact same thing maybe you will get a script for most antihistamines and a mild low dose antibiotic that pointless then end up with a total cost of R600+ for a self limiting infection.

LOL, and you say health practioners are rogues. Patients rob themselves with their smartass attitude

EDIT:

I will say it again you dont need to see a doctor for flu at all, unless

A) Its getting worse after 7 days

B) Phelgm changes colour for lots of yellow (not a tiny spec) or brown. (green requrie immediate attention)

C) Paranoid you have swine flu

Thanks,

I didn't know that. I don't have children and only remember the excruciating pain I had as a child and the fact that I had to have my tonsils removed. Hence my reaction to the doctor & child.

Oh no. She Googled it instead of Gargling it. Hence her continuous tonsillitis. :)

Im suffering from tonsillitis now while on holiday. High fever, sore everything. Doc prescribed antibiotics and gave me some gargling stuff. This sucks...

to prevent a secondary infection?

tonsilitis is generally the secondary bacterial infection. Strep throat. You can just use an antiseptic mouthwash and salt water ect nothing wrong with that to sterilize the area. However if its severely infected like pus on the tonsils itself then you will need a course of antibiotics to treat it as it can progress to bronchitis.

Its difficult to say without actually seeing the state the tonsils are in. Also could be prescribed as prophylaxis

It must have been Gargle..the same thing happened with me some days back and my doctor said only antio biotics will work,But i was asked to gargle with salt water as well..You can try tea leaves as well..Just boil them in warm water and make her gargle it..

I would gargle with brandy and lots of it. And then I will swallow it. At least if it doesn't work it will make me feel gooood.

Can get a lot worse than merely bronchitis. Rheumatic fever for example
