"Too far from exchange" to get VDSL

Telkom still insists they cannot help me with getting 20/40Mb.

Small red star is where our property is.
Big red star is the exchange we currently connect to.
Arrows show MSAN's in the area which support 20 and 40Mb.

I feel your pain. I tried again and got told that the line is 2.4KM from the MSAN an 1.2KM is the max length.

Yeah right, 2.4km does not equate to 8.5db attenuation. :wtf:

So frustrating!

Now you know why I call them Hellscum.

I did a check this morning and the green arrow MSAN is 700m from our place (which means I could get a stonkingly good connection), the blue arrow is 1.2km, and the purple one is 2.6km.
The exchange we connect to is about 4.6km away.
I give up arguing with Hellscum reps on this forum, and their apathy towards those who essentially pay their salaries.

"Good day Ryan

Both Charl and Wesley had checked and motivated to Network Provisioning to confirm availability.
They have considered the option of diverting you to another dslam, however the copper quality and distance will only allow stable 10mb service.
Network Provisioning were unable to confirm if and when next planned roll-outs will commence.

kind regards

In a nutshell, they clearly do not want to help.

I had more joy. Charl got my line stats - the line is 583m in length, so he has escalated within Telkom and they will do tests to determine max attainable rate and then make a call if I can get 40 or only 20. Holding thumbs.

That should be good for 20. My line is ~780m and I'm sync'ing @ 20Mbps (ADSL2+) without a hitch and good line stats too.

So they switched me over to VDSL (only a 10meg profile though to test line quality). Looks like the attainable rate is around 80mbps, so I'll be upgraded to 40 in the next few days.

Big thanks to Charl for getting this sorted!

Congrats man! Enjoy!

Persistence pays :D

So close...yet so far. My upload is syncing perfectly at 3072 now, but my download is still on the 10240 profile. I've never heard of this configuration, but the extra upload speed is welcome at least.

And...finally...sorted! Quite good numbers if Telkom decide to ever go above 40meg:

Actual rate (up) 3072 kbps
Actual rate (down) 40956 kbps
Data transfered (sent) 0 kB
Data transfered (received) 0 kB
Output power (up) 12.2 dBm
Output power (downstream) 429496725.3 dBm
Line attenuation (up) 0 dBm
Line attenuation (downstream) 16.6 dB
Noise margin (up) 31.3 dB
Noise margin (downstream) 17.5 dB

This is my current specs on a 10mb line, i asked to be put up to a 40 and then 2 days later get a call that this is not possible, do you think i can get 20mb? I have asked telkom to go for the 20 then, so will have to see...

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10239 kbps 1021 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 db 18.4 db
Noise Margin 14.1 db 10.2 db

Consider yourself lucky to have 10Mbps...

38.5db downstream attenuation is a marginal 10Mbps sync, assuming a good enough DS SNR, which you fortunately have

You won't be getting either 20 or 40Mbps on that line, unfortunately. They will have to install a mini DSLAM nearby or find another way to shorten your copper path considerably. I am in the exact same boat as you, with a marginal 10Mb sync.

well I had a 51.db downstream up until a month ago with no problems. So not really sure why you think now at 38.5 its a problem. They have just notified me that 20mbps will def be possible, so will have to wait and see

10Mbps is not possible with 51 dB attenuation. You must have been on 4Mbps...?

Furthermore, 20Mbps is not possible with 38.5 dB attenuation...

Anyways if you're the expert, don't be asking the questions ;)

Good luck with the upgrade.

That is nonsense, you can have 10Mbps easy with 40dB. These are my stats:

Actual rate (up) 1020 kbps
Actual rate (down) 10236 kbps
Data transfered (sent) 0 kB
Data transfered (received) 0 kB
Output power (up) 12 dBm
Output power (downstream) 16.9 dBm
Line attenuation (up) 22.9 dBm
Line attenuation (downstream) 42.8 dB
Noise margin (up) 7.5 dB
Noise margin (downstream) 9.0 dB

My line doesn't drop, only load-shedding has messed me around so far.

Not so easy... You should consider yourself lucky too.

What is nonsense about what I said? I said that 38.5dB is a marginal 10Mb sync, which it is. I did not say it is impossible, I said it was marginal. Which it is.

So is 40dB. And in fact you should consider yourself lucky too, in that regard.

The point is, if your DS attenuation is in that range (38-40 db) then you may get 10Mbps if you have a good copper loop with low noise margins

Please see attached image, which is a fairly accurate theoretical guide for the most part. There might be SLIGHT variations depending on the quality of your copper or ADSL modem chipset used, but clearly you're not going to get 20Mbps with 38 dB of attenuation with current tech, and that's no nonsense

How does one get hold of Charl?

Nice !

Please paste an unedited screen capture of your line stats too?

I will do it tonight, fon router doesn't seem to like my switch or pastel over the network. BTW your graph doesn't take into account VDSL, i believe ADSL 2+ and VDSL are different
