I applied for VDSL and eventually the message got back that I'm too far from the MSAN. I'm currently syncing at 10mbit/sec with the following stats:

Attenuation down: 8.5db
Attenuation up: 3.7db
SNR up: 30.1db (!)

Surely I can squeeze 20meg VDSL out of this? The router reports >24mbps attainable rate for ADSL2+.

Agreed, you should be able to get 20 VDSL without any problems.

Send a PM to TelkomZA, he might be able to assist.

I did already, Charl replied that it was fine, then I applied for the service and they declined it. So sent TelkomZA another message and someone else replied from the account that I am indeed too far from the exchange. :(

well wait till carl is back he always short things out fast and let things work

dont know who stands in his place atm,as there is a few, there not as helpfull as carl

also your stats awe so great!!
u live next to it ? :P

It's about a 600m drive, which is pretty much the same way the copper goes.

Perhaps apply for 20Mbps ADSL instead if they're being finicky about the VDSL application. You're certainly not too far from the exchange for 20Mbps based on those stats, and your line will easily support it.

You might even be able to reach 30Mbps without any issues.

On adsl, lol.

No on VDSL with those stats you could reach 30Mbps possibly. If you upgrade to the 40Mbps VDSL profile your router will sync at the maximum speed that does not allow the downstream or upstream SNR to dip below 6dB.

That means that if you are too far for 40Mbps but close enough to handle more than 20Mbps you can get anything between 20 and 40Mbps as long as you are on the 40Mbps VDSL profile. If Telkom will allow it is another question.

Same story here.

"Too far from the exchange, blah blah blah"

But..... our area is surrounded by 20 and 40Mb lines and the neighbour across the road (who is connected to same exchange we are connected to) has a 20Mb VDSL line....
Hellscum, we praise your idiocy.

""Too far from the exchange, blah blah blah""

heard the same today again

wonder what they will say if u live next to it, "you to close to the exchange" ?

Run around and see if you can find a techie to call the Telkom people?

thing is i rarely see them around :/
its hard to get them to actuly look and test for problems
but its harder to get it fixed
well so it seems to me,some guys here are lucky to get it fixed in once shot!

also @OP

anyluck with telkom?
also try pming telkomza theirs a few ppl that works on that account, one of them will help you and short you out :)

if ur very lucky,Carl's back and he will help you,he is probably the best telkoms got

Why should any of this bs be necessary? Why don't Telkom just do their damned job / provide the services which we pay them well to do?

Don't ask me, I am still wondering about that. If we could just get another wholesale provider things would get a lot better/more efficient.

Ya, not interrogating you dont worry. :) Just very fed up about 'that' if we don't bribe and chase, the work does not get done, and that this has become the general expectation of everyone in SA. There are official channels for faults and complaints, but these never work!! After days of waiting for feedback from a Telkom fault, they just close it without contacting the customer with a report about the fault by e-mail or phone. Often the only way to avoid such a conclusion is to hunt someone who knows what they are doing to take over responsibility of and escalate the fault reference. *fed up*...

Telkom still insists they cannot help me with getting 20/40Mb.

Small red star is where our property is.
Big red star is the exchange we currently connect to.
Arrows show MSAN's in the area which support 20 and 40Mb.
