Cape Town - Swimming bosses on Sunday prohibited Western Province from playing in the final of the inter-provincial waterpolo tournament because they did not have enough players of colour in the side.

In fact, five of the participating sides were banned from the tournament, held at SACS school in Newlands, for not meeting quota requirements.

The outcome of such drastic action was that the team that came last in the pool matches, Kwazulu-Natal, ended up playing in the final. They were beaten 14-4 by Gauteng.

But after the match, Gauteng actually gave back their medals, saying that they did not regard themselves as true winners of the tournament.

Chairperson of Swimming South Africa, Rushdee Warley, said that the requirement was that either one of the thirteen waterpolo players making up a squad had to be of colour, or one of the team management had to be of colour.

"The decision, endorsed by the technical committee, was made three months ago. We just implemented it.

Very bitter

"If waterpolo as a sport, refuses to transform, we need to take drastic steps like this", said Warley

Duncan Woods, the 29 year old captain of the Western province side, was very bitter about his side not being able to compete in the final.

"It's disgusting. It's not the players fault. We have no interest in politics. The administrators must sort out their problems.

We have trained five days a week for the last six months for this tournament. Why did they let us take part in the tournament in the first place?, said a disappointed Woods.

According to Warley, though, it was very difficult to tell which players were of which colour based on just the team lists that were submitted.

Such rubbish, when will they learn quotas are not the answer!
 
Good on Gauteng. I'm glad they realised the implications and unfairness or merely being pushed through.
 
Wasn't there an article in the press the other day about quotas in sport being scrapped? I think it was just after the RWC final.

What are the politicians' frikkin problem. Just because they took over the country doen't mean they have to take over every frikkin facet of society.

Since when has black people had a yearning to participate in water polo?

What's there next target ...? The u/93 womens jukskei team.

The worst thing about this debacle is that the players themselves pay to travel down to the hosting region to play. All costs are upon them.

Now, is seems that there is probably no development funds then at all by making players themselves to foot the bill. How's this going to to improve the chances of a PDI being able to afford a sport such as this?

wtf plays water polo anyway? :) just take what you can get and forget colour !

Jocks. ;). You know those people who are "hardcore" at school but mostly end up as failures in real life because they aren't treated as "hot-shots" anymore in the business world.
 
yeah agreed, no place for politics in sport but having said that surely the provinces are aware of what's been discussed and requested regarding quotas? surely 1 player of colour isn't extreme? surely they to an extent have themselves to blame for turning the competition into a farce?
 
should've just picked some random person off the street, atleast they'd be able to compete then..

or if they flew SAA then they could've just borrowed an 'air host' :) since we know SAA wouldnt go against regulations and hire someone that cant swim

Yeah you right, rather have a null and void competition with no over all credible winner...

In a population of close to 50mil we cannot find 15 players of colour good enough to represent their respective provinces??!! come on?!! The sport needs to make the effort. Rugby and cricket have and are reaping the rewards, these okies need to wake up a bit...
