Point taken, but that's also where good, quality education comes into play. Oh wait...This is kind of what's required these days. Or at least the ability to understand the "big picture". It's no good coding some huge data capture and processing app if you're clueless about the db. Equally, it's no good designing an amazing, complicated n-tier architecture if you have no idea about the network infrastructure or the platforms - etc etc. You can specialise in one aspect but to be of any use you have to have some experience and a good understanding of everything else. This is very rare these days, though.
