Depending on which distro you want you can get it from the freedom toaster for free. Ubuntu is on the toaster.

Just take a flash drive large enough to store the ISO, or take a blank CD-R or CD+R. The toasters have USB ports and CD/DVD writers (may just be CD writers I can't recall). They are essentially devices that exist just for people like us with limited or no bandwidth and low caps. They are normally on university campuses or in shopping centres. In Cape Town there are a few: UCT Computer Science Dept., UWC Computer Science Dept., Canal Walk, Long Street.

You can search for your nearest toaster on that website.

I went through the same pains. I tried most of the possible distros and found that either the installer doesn't have enough disk space or its soooo slow.

Try Xubuntu 7.10... its about the only distro that will install and have satisfactory performance on the Asus 2g Surf. http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home

From what I have read in the past generic Ubuntu had issues with SSDs. There are versions of Ubuntu customised for netbooks that eliminate a lot of those problems.

Something you might be interested in is Easy Peasy Linux as it is pretty much Ubuntu without the netbook bugs and a customised GUI for smaller netbook screens. You get access to the standard Ubuntu repositories so you get all the Ubuntu packages (assuming the hardware can run the things you decide download :D).

Apparently it is as user-friendly as Ubuntu so still a good thing for new users.

ahem...It just happens to be raining MORE links :). The SAIX server is okay.. You could also try here if you wish.

Another note: Im on local only. I cant get to the toaster site. Anyone know where I can find one in Jozi? Also, is there one in Pietermaritzburg? There WAS one at The Hive, but its since been taken down :(

The ASUS Eee PC 2G Surf certainly deserves to be called an ultraportable laptop
The linux version running Xandros features applications like the Firefox Web browser and the office suite OpenOffice.org that allow you to accomplish many common tasks on the move.
 
Is there no local mirror where I can download eeebuntu from. Even with a 4mbps link it is slooooow!
 
To the guy asking about the Asus, you should also try Ubuntu Netbook Remix, that's the official (from Canonical) Netbook "version" of Ubuntu. I've tried it on the Acer Aspire One, works great. Of course, YMMV.

Also, for downloading distros, if you've got the bandwidth, the fastest way is to use Torrents.
Also, according to their page, the UCT Comp. Sci. building has an open Access point for copying distros off their server, so you don't even have to use the toaster (can't remember where the link is, google UCT linux user group, I think)
 
Puppy rocks. Good to see it on the list. But for everyday use, OOBOONTOO like we say in AFRICA.
