Top man quits Telkom target

Interesting perspective on the takeover bid. What would the impact on Business Connexion's business be should the takeover bid fall through? The damage will be done and Telkom will walk away with extra business anyway (all they'll need to do is figure out a way to keep it ... contracts anyone?)

I'd also jump ship, they're in a limbo and it must be quite stressful.

Ha ha ha, not only does no one really want to use their services, no one actually wants to work for Telkom.... ha ha ha ha

I think Lesley Stones of Business Day is jumping the gun here. How does he know that Willem van Rensburg quit BCX because Telkom "might" take them over? I mean it's not yet decided whether the deal will go through. How well does Lesley know Mr van Rensburg to arrive to that conclusion?

Well I'd say he worked for 17 years at BCX. A man building up a pension and has a good allegiance to the company.

34 6 month intervals. He quits during a period where a dumbass decision by BCX has lead to opportunities being missed by the company may be to no avail. A fair deduction, but you have a valid argument. 'Might' might lead to a bad decision, unless he knows something we don't. Lost confidence in management, after the clear intention that many at BCX wants this merger to happen? (More high position greedy money makers that don't care about overworked, underpayed staff). Maybe.

Can't say I blame them, it's really sh1tty to work for a way below par salary with no structure benefits and for a company that treats you just like a number, and does not give a **** for your wellbeing or working environment.

I currently earn 15x what Telskam was prepared to pay me to prevent me from leaving all those years ago. Was it worth leaving? Hell yes, even though I went from bad to worse initially...

How well did you read the article before you reached that conclusion?

The article clearly states:
which is not a conclusion that Van Rensburg is jumping ship due to the suspended Telkodemonopolies takeaway order for BCX.

The article's title is also not indicative of such a conclusion having been made by the author.

The R2,4bn takeover bid [of Business Connexion] has already triggered numerous resignations from technicians not wanting to work for Telkom, which has notched up a history of stifling rather than encouraging innovation.

Now Willem van Rensburg has resigned after 17 years with the company, citing the opportunity to pursue other options in the industry.
But the above gives that implication, all this under the heading:

Top man quits Telkom target

It could have read "Long-serving executive leaves BCX" or something to that effect with the possible Telkom link only an after-thought but on this article it's the main theme from the very first paragraph.

Dealing with the headline for the article first, what does "Top man quits Telkom target" mean in plain English? - obviously a contracted headline equivalent to 'Top man quits [BCX which] Telkom [has] target[ed for takeover]' or simply 'Top man quits BCX which Telkom has targeted for takeover', maybe there is another interpretation of the headline that I'm not seeing here?

IMO not really: what the above states quite clearly is that other former BCX employees left BCX bcos they did not want to work for Telkodemonopolies - whether true or not is debatable, the article does not imply that this was what caused Van Rensburg to resign, but the article does clearly state that Van Rensburg was quizzed as to whether Telkodemonopolies was a factor in his decision to resign, which he declined to comment on...

The article can be intepreted differently...but fair enough I see what you are saying.

BCX exec quits

[ Johannesburg, 30 March 2007 ] - Willem van Rensburg, group executive in charge of strategy and telecommunications at JSE-listed Business Connexion (BCX), has resigned.

Van Rensburg will pursue "personal business interests" and will leave BCX at the end of this month, after spending 16 years at the firm. He says he will take a month-long sabbatical before announcing his future plans.

In August 2005, Van Rensburg spearheaded BCX's R35 million acquisition of Bidvest Network Solutions, subsequently renamed Business Connexion Communications.

Van Rensburg's announcement comes in the middle of the Competition Tribunal's hearings into whether Telkom's proposed R2.4 billion takeover of the IT services firm should be allowed to proceed.

Dimension Data, the Competition Commission and the Internet Service Providers' Association oppose the deal on the grounds that it will harm competition in the sector.

For me this report is far more professional and objective, and doesn't reek of sour grapes against Telkom as opposed to the one written by Lesley Stones' and published on MyADSL. :)
