Top Private Schools

Most of the schools on that list are church schools. Back in the day they would have excluded Jews.
Both Herzlia and KD are Jewish schools which are open to all provided you take the Jewish education.
Thanks for answering my original question  I didn't say they would be excluded.

And potential future billionaires ;)
Entrepreneurship has very little to do with book smarts. There are maybe 5 or 6 SA billionaires. Hardly a reliable statistic to use to link to what schools would be best.

But you're also judging what schools are best by how many bokke they've produced, and there are maybe 1000 all time Bokke since we've had a Springbok rugby team. So this conversation is heading for troll city anyway.

I'm judging by environments that are conducive to flourishing/excelling. What would you have us judge by?

If there are only 5 or 6 billionaires and not one of them went to private school, maybe that says something.

Yeah, there are a whole bunch of really good public schools around. My youngest is in Gr6 this year, so we've started looking at high school options in earnest.
  • St Mary's DSG. (private): R142 580 + R3 000 + R43 600 (once-off)
  • Eduplex: R90 900 (private) + R10 000
  • Affies (public): R51 960
  • Menlo Park (public): R49 390
Being an educator in Pretoria, if your daughter can learn in afrikaans, it's a definite option. Private schools are great and at most, you get what you pay for. But the afrikaans government schools are top class as well.

I don't think you quite understand what actually goes on at private schools, The experiences you get are simply out of this world and require money, lots of it, Public schools cant give you that sort of experience because they don't have the budget. On an educational level maybe you have a point, But private schools aren't only about the curriculum, It is the overall experience that you pay for. That makes it worth every penny.
Please humor me, where do you get these amazing insights?

Let me school you. You don't always get what you pay for, and sometimes you get ripped off, like anything in life.

From a purely academic standpoint I first look what the bachelors pass rate is for matric at the school over recent years, and what percentage of the students achieve A aggregates. Then how big the classes are per teacher and what subjects are offered.

How can a school that consistently averages 2-2.5 A aggregates per matriculant and has a 80-85% bachelor pass rate be as good academically as a school that achieves 3-3.5 A aggregates per matriculant with a 99% bachelor pass rate? Does not compute.

For extra-murals and sport that's a lot easier to judge. How do they do against other schools, what support do they get from coaches, and how many extra-murals do they offer.

From https://saschoolsports.co.za/ (and latest national teams posted above) public schools are at least as good as private schools.

Then academically there are public schools that compare very favourably on the metrics you mention. For example, both Affies and Menlo (the schools we're looking at) have in excess of 3.5 distinctions per learner with bachelor pass rates touching 100%.

I agree 100% as far as sports go. Apart from Bishops where you get to have sex with your hot waterpolo coach.

You chose literally the best performing public schools around there as examples though. Menlo and Affies are the cream of the crop of schools in Gauteng, but they don't they consistently average over 3.5 distinctions per matriculant as you claim. Source? I certainly would be happy sending my kids there if I lived down the road.

I would not put Boys High up there in the top tier based on their academic results which is what prompted me to respond in the first place.

But I'm Cape Town with daughters where the private schools like Herschel, Springfield, St Cyps offer more and perform better significantly better than the public school alternatives besides Rustenburg and Westerford. 100% bachelors pass rates without about half achieving A aggregates overall, and excellent sports facilities and coaching.

As I mentioned earlier, geography plays a big role here. Those two schools happen to be the two closest schools to us (together with St Mary's which is VERY expensive and Girls' High which has become highly politicised). My consistent point throughout the thread isn't that private schools are bad, it is that there are a number of public schools that are on a par with the top private schools.

Affies (girls) has 37 years of continuous 100% pass rate and, in the last five years, has averaged between 3.1 and 3.6 distinctions per learner with 99% bachelor pass rates. Menlopark isn't far behind.

There's no dear there. They do have archery though.
Honestly, the NW province is not what I think of when I consider giving kids a broad education, and the "dangers of the city" have spread to even the smallest of towns.

How far are you from Stellenbosch? Bloemhof seems to be right up there!

Edit: and Rhenish https://www.rhenish.co.za/academic

Edit2: Rustenburg and Westerford seem top class too!

Interesting. People think the NW is like gangsters paradise ?
The specific school i mentioned produces top athletes, academics and even artists.
FYI

And for a goosebumps finale

Are you the principal? :)
NO. Didn't even go that that school. In my days Bergsig was the top school here. Since they started the Academy they have left the top group. I've got friends with kids in this school - Just very impressed in how they run things.
From archery, hockey to rugby - They outperform. And like you've seen in the videos - That's not mickey mouse entertainment.

Why is there a Rustenburg High in Cape Town and a Rustenburg High in Rustenburg? How are we supposed to know which one is which?

You see - that depends on what school you went to.
According to my schooling, the one that says Cape Town is in ......
Cape Town.
