Top smartphone apps in SA

In South Africa, social media apps tend to dominate the top ten most popular free smartphone applications for Android and iOS. At the same time, games are the most downloaded paid apps on both operating systems.

The data shows that six of the top ten most popular free Android applications are social media apps, as are seven of the top ten most popular on iOS.

WhatsApp Messenger takes the top spot on both Android and iOS. On iOS, TikTok is the second most popular, while on Android, the Google app takes second place.

How many folks install this on non-Sammy devices
I've seen it recommended a lot on reddit...not sure if it works on other devices though. I installed it again looking for a better browser then eventually settled on Vivaldi.

Don't know why TikTok is so popular. But from what I gather it's helping reduce peoples attention span to that of a goldfish. Also giving CCP all your juicy info. If you really want to compare TikTok to anything I'd say the closest would be a toilet or a sewer.

Maybe I missed it, but what is MyBB's source for this data?

The Twitter apps (Android and iOS) don't appear anywhere in the entire article, which seems highly unlikely for SA:

The other thing that irks me a bit is #8 "Messenger", are we to assume that is supposed to be Facebook Messenger? I'm sure there is enough space to fit the word "Facebook" in that row in the table.

As for TikTok being #2 on iOS and not even appearing on the Android top 10 list for SA, that seems highly unlikely, especially since I expect TikTok to be more popular with youngins (sp?) that shouldn't be walking about with an expensive iPhone, whereas they are more likely to be gifted with an el cheapo Android phone.

I thought the same thing - but look at many schools ? The majority of students want iPhone from their folks to fit in and keep up with their peers. Studies do show many youngsters have iPhone too :

According to the result of a recent survey conducted by the Mobile Ecosystem Forum, 44 percent of iOS smartphone users in 2019 were between 16 and 24 years old. 30 percent of respondents in that age range were Android users

It's designed to be super addictive and it works.
Worse thing a parent can do is give the kid a smartphone.

Couldn't agree more. But it seems like a smartphone or tablet makes bad parenting very easy "go play with your tablet / smartphone".
