Top ten Linux distros

Ubuntu is a noob linux, and I dont see how that and Fedora can be in the top5 since it has so many cycles.

CentOS & ClearOS > all
Stable, Enterprise and long term support.

How about a roundup about BSD OSes?

tell me do you find any irony in your statement. you do know that Fedora is a Red Hat project used as a testing ground for Red Hat releases? and in so much that CentOS is based on Red Hat, Fedora is very important to the existence of CentOS?

Personally my preference is Ubuntu for server* and Opensuse for the desktop

*We use to do everything with appliances as far as we could to assist the 1st and 2nd tier support guys with the learning curve (VERY PAINFULLY SLOW learning curve) then ended up with issues as there are many companies that build a decent appliance based linux service (I am not talking hardware just vm's) and then disappears as they overestimate the uptake and underestimate the costs of keeping the business going until you have a market share that is large enough to maintain the company. Or in certain cases appliances that were available but had no support. This became and issue so we switched to Ubuntu purely for one reason. How many times when searching for a particular issue in linux have you noticed that usually at least a third of the responses are for Ubuntu and Ubuntu related support? It is very impressive how active the Ubuntu community is and how much is readily available for our first and second tier guys. Additionally the support is simple enough for them to grasp (well not always but here is to hoping :p ) Thanks to Mark for driving this into more mainstream market. It has been a huge benefit to the linux community and not only the Ubuntu stable.

- Sidenote: After many years fiddling with linux I can honestly say the following. I absolutely despise fedora. The reasons are varied and I am not going to get into it now. I will run and play with most linux platforms but will never again willingly work on that mess they call an operating system. Granted there was a time when it was good now it's simply a method of torturing users.

Ubuntu is Number 1 for a reason.......it's the best Linux distro ever created! :)

I hate some people's attitudes on this thread....almost like they helped write [insert favorite Linux distro name here] and now look down at other people because of their uberness.

Just want to say to you : GET A LIFE!!

I helped write Ubuntu Linux and now look down on all of you because I am ubercool! :D

Call Ubuntu what you like, still my favourite one.

The only thing holding me back from Linux is the partitioning for a dual boot, really scared I will screw up and lose my windows data, It looks complicated.

Lol, best you leave your computer off & unplugged, don't touch it :D

Just kidding, it's really simple but if you are still uncomfortable get someone with a bit of linux knowledge to help you ;)

i think i last used fedora on 13. given the varying distros i've. used i can't say it is vastly different to warrant such a negative feel towards it.

I have numerous reasons and I am not the only one. Many of friends that have been Fedora fans over the years have given up. Many things that we use simply didn't work right anymore. From anomalous issues with vi to extreme routing issues on pretty basic networks the list goes on and on.

I guess the point is that they release pre-alpha quality software into the open market. It use to be one of the most robust and reliable distro's. Now it only leaves me with a foul taste in my mouth. I have very little time due to my work load and troubleshooting things that should work out of the box and losing a few hours is too dire a cost for me........

I was going to ignore warchyldes first post, after all, each to his own and Linux is about choice but it is ubuntu that has a broken vi implementation on initial installation (vim works) and I suspect that there would be similar "extreme routing issues" if SELinux was enabled by default as it is on Fedora.

I have no axe to grind as I use both in the desktop arena - Ubuntu for clients, Fedora in the office :)

BTW Fedora can't be that bad if it came in second :D

Interesting, what's broken in vi? I use it (not vim) all the time.

bringing up funny characters while typing and that one that really irritated the hell out of me was while navigating it would jump around randomly and replace or change capitlization of characters, breaking the conf files..... at first I thought it was my putty that went wonky so tested it from different machines with different copies of putty (all the machines that were the same version of Fedora had the issue.. to this day still don't know what caused it...

@MickZA it was not SE that was causing it - was some module that didn't function correctly by jumping through a whole bunch of hoops eventually fixed it. Crap like that shouldn't be necessary for a box with a single VLAN and a basic network configuration.

and for the record there is no such thing as the perfect OS (Ubuntu included) - just ones that give us less hassle.

@warchylde - you're discussing server Linux whereas the popularity chart is obviously based on desktop Linux. It also seems you're discussing ancient history as you can't remember either the Fedora version or the module that gave you the hassles.

BTW why shouldn't "crap like that" be necessary when dealing with bleeding edge distros? - if you wanted a safe Fedora variant you should have installed RedHat or CentOS.

Whahahaha bleeding edge AKA pre-alpha will keep that in mind when choosing my next install :p Now stop being so serious this is not a crusade just a discussion on personal preference

Tried Sabayon this morning... not bad....

Here you go Al - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1636571

that ref is for a server install but it's been like this for a couple of releases on the gnome desktop version, very irritating having to remember to type vim instead of vi.

Must admit I've never had that problem with either ubuntu or kubuntu.

Talking about problems, an irritating problem I've found with ubuntu (not kubuntu) is the keyboard sometimes dies in a virtualbox after the ubuntu screen saver kicks in. Also with ubuntu and the screen saver (again, not kubuntu), browsers (both chrome and ff) lose their auto-complete in the address bar after the screen saver has been on for a while. Closing the browser and restarting it fixes the problem.

You're prolly using the windows navigation keys while in insert mode ;)

vi/vim, never got use to it and probably never will. All I know is how to edit a file and exit with saving, beyond that I'm useless :D

Long live nano!
