SA’s newest pay-TV operator On Digital Media (ODM), which owns TopTV, plans to add new channels and possibly even new channel bouquets to its network later this year as it steps up its battle with incumbent MultiChoice, which owns DStv.

ODM chief marketing officer Elouise Kelly says a team of TopTV content buyers is flying to Los Angeles in the US next week to scour for new channels and to secure deals with international content providers.

Kelly says ODM will announce details of the new channels by September or October this year.

TopTV, which was launched on 1 May, has enjoyed strong demand from SA consumers. It has sold more than 50 000 decoders, though ODM won’t disclose how many of those are already activated as it doesn’t want MultiChoice to know.

TopTV’s entry into the market has resulted in MultiChoice developing a new entry level, R99/month channel bouquet called DStv Lite. The Naspers-owned company has also cut the cost of decoders and installation in reaction to TopTV’s subsidised offer of R499 for decoder and installation.

The new channels are unlikely to include local sports programming as MultiChoice has bought content rights to all the main sporting codes, including soccer and rugby. However, Kelly says ODM is keen to bid for sports rights, especially soccer, when they come up for renewal.

Kelly says initial feedback from TopTV customers suggests their favourite channels are the Fox channels, including Fox Entertainment and, surprisingly, Fox News, the conservative-leaning US news network.

Other channels that have proved popular are Black Entertainment Television, documentary channels Top Explore and Top History, and the two Discovery channels.

Most subscribers have signed up for the premium R249/month option rather than going for the entry level R99/month option, Kelly says. — Duncan McLeod, TechCentral http://www.techcentral.co.za/toptv-to-add-new-channels/14390/

I really would like to get BVN. I hate the fact that DSTV have this channel on their premium package.

No need to fly to LA - get us HBO and Comedy Central and I'll sign up just for those 2 :)

and yet the funny part is that, probably 60%-80% of the Premium Subscribers dont even know that the channel exits, especially that it is a Speciality Channel :)

they need to get decent content on the existing channels as well .... their movies are old SABC/etv re-runs .... would be worth it if they get some decent shows that air in a week/month(at most) of originally airing in the states ... now that would be worth paying for

What was the break even subscriber figure for Top TV? Isn't this just a marketing scheme for now. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for competition and TopTV, but new channels already?

Announce details in September or October ... don't hold your breath! Rememba when we just had to wait for a launch date???

+1, HBO and Comedy Central would make their series channels complete, I hope they listen to consumer suggestions unlike the competition

C'mon Dyl, TTV are here to produce lasting Fruits, remember they are proudly South African, with US Mindest, with MC i was sick and tired of UK Content, how many BBC Channel and Radio are there agian 1,2,3>>>>>

Within a matter of a year will have a PVR...and HD PVR, who knows what next: These guys are here to serve us thats what i want to believe, so believe with me too as well :D

While there, is the Italiano Music Channel an HD Channel, cause i see HD on my Bottom Right Screen

and a lot of Dutch folk have the premium package just for BVN.

I think they need to firstly fix whatever makes my TV blackout whenever I watch anything and also get proper BET

somebody just get comedy central or spike tv please, ffs

By BET, You mean the Straight Feed from the US, not the Euroepean Version :)

The Funny Thing about TTP, are the 2news Channels, Fox And MSNSC...the weird part is the timing offcourse. I wake up in the Morning CAT 05:45am, US Time Is 08:45pm, and im like OMG, still Adjusting, but thus far, the News Coverage on TTV are so Interesting. I mean we get to to explore more on USA soil, rather than hearing it only when there are outbreaking news.....I have heard enough of BBC Television, SKY News & Euro News were the Worst..

So please TTV, just license Fox Sports Australia http://www.foxsports.com.au/ Since you are already with Fox Products. just complete their package :)

You're never going to get HBO... Ever. Let it go. If you do it will be like the African Showtime channel. HBO has licensing agreements across the world and in SA so the original channel will never be broadcast in SA (or anywhere) much like the real showtime, FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, and the CW. Comedy central is possible though.

At last...someone with a logic post.

Yes.HBO shows many licensed content which don't belong to them. They can't sell what they don't own.M-Net is your local HBO.

Any HBO outside USA,like HBO Asia is a channel with just HBO owned content and/or just a licensed agreement to use the brandname, like TOPTV's Showtime,a Scandinawian company...its got
nothing to do with USA Showtime...but its got an agreement to use the brand name.
