Why is it currently disabled?

Why the long wait to enable it?

Personally think that as DSTV have brought out a cheaper PVR the ball is in TOP TV's court.

The only cheap thing that they could do right now is to enable the port.

They could also bring out cheap(ish) branded hard drives as add-ons to the current set-up but even this is not entirely needed.

Your thoughts?

I heard a rumour somewhere (and I really hope it's just an unfounded rumour), that once the USB PVR functionality is enabled, it will only work for pause/rewind functions, not actually recording stuff for later viewing.
That would kinda suck...

yep, that would have me cancel my subscription and go back to not having any form of pay tv.

Not true and quite the opposite...it will just gives you recording (with drm) and not full pvr.

Drm also does not bug me, stick a 1TB drive on there with SD recordings and you will have hundreds of hours recording time.

Somebody misunderstood.

It CAN be used for recording but only on the channel you're currently watching. As in, you can't watch one channel and record another.

Note: This is once the function is enabled which it currently is not.

That is all I want it to do.

Play, Pause and record one channel at a time.

That's exactly what I need. I want to record stuff during the day while I am at the office. I am not even concerned with pausing. I don't need a "record-ten-channels-at-once-while-watching-four-others" pvr.

I wonder if they are planning something like xtra view. Like a second decoder giving you a second channel for a small monthly fee...

wait so the PVR wont change when the USB functionality is put in place?

Not sure how they would control that using the current decoder (no input ports, two cards? how do TopTV know both cards are in decoders in the same house? etc)

Good Day,

I've escalated this matter to our TopTV team and will provide feeback as soon as its available.

Thank you for your support and input in making TopTV the best paytv company in the country.:)

Well, the same way as the multichoice decoders do, using a heartbeat cable via the RF out.

As TopTV wizard never got back to me on this I emailed several people the same question myself...

We have not planned to enable the USB port for recording but rather other value added services. We are busy developing the PVR and will have it ready early 2011.
