Tormented talent

A recent UK study declared that “the relentless influx of e-mails, phone calls and instant messages received by modern workers can reduce their IQs more than smoking marijuana”. The study found that men are twice as prone to distraction as women.

weird.

Dave has left the.......

Men don't multi-task as well.. this I know all to well about :(

The study would be worth more if it were more academic

I welcome a study such as this, although I have very mixed feelings having a company such as Deloitte doing academic research.

Deloitte runs the very questionable "Best Company To Work For" poll. Unfortunately they seem very unwilling to divulge how they use employee information to determine exactly what the "Best Company" is.

Unfortunately, most managers have the critical thinking skills of goldfish and tend the things that this company says seriously.

We should be highly dubious of "research" done by companies and rather insist on proper academic research.

A report by the international Deloitte consultancy group says that while technology can provide a 24-hour supply of information, its intrusiveness also prevents workers from concentrating. “One study . found that the average employee switches tasks every three minutes, is interrupted every two minutes, and has a maximum attention span of 12 minutes.”

Another doobious claim from Deloitte, much the same as their last, 'the father of the internet.'

No doubt who is now paying their bills (toss around a few lies, I mean, what difference does a bit of propaganda make?)

WTF?? Since when can being extremely distracted and thereby becoming inefficient be compared to the temporary / permanent loss of braincell activity and thought processes by the use of drugs?

It would seem whomever did this research in the UK did personal tests on the effects of smoking marijuana before writing the article :D I think what was meant to be said was the "net effect of all the distractions has shown to have a worsened effect on concentration (focus) and the ability to perform mental tasks with the overall decline in productivity being more extreme than if one were to smoke marijuana - albeit on a temporary basis" or something along those lines. The solution would simply be to learn how to prioritise one's work, adjust the environment accordingly (ie. disable e-mail notification, put the phone on voicemail, place a sign at your desk informing casual passer-bys you're busy and to return later, or simply put on earphones to bloack out the ambient "white noise" / office chatter) so that you can focus for 40-60 minutes on your work. Better yet, ensure you take regular vacation days to unwind, destress and return to work revitilised.

Now when braincells become damaged through substance abuse ... what remedy is there again? Thought so ... not wise making a direct comparison now is there

Maybe the author's age is such that a natural consequence has become the reduction in IQ :D One doesn't become less intelligent unless due to injury which affects ones capacity to think or reason / don't live life (ie. socialise, read news, be aware of ones environment etc.) or age to such an extent that exercise and proper nutrition (or vitamins) cannot complement natural enzymes for proper fuctioning of the body.

Why mention marijuana at all? What does it have to do with any discussion?

In my book an untrue analogy = propaganda
