Can anyone give advice on what is currently the best torrent software for Linux?

As you will have guessed this is only for legitimate use. There is however an interesting article on Toms Hardware <http://www.tomsguide.com/us/P2P-LimeWire-75-trillion-RIAA-Kimba-Wood,news-10580.html>, where the American music industry is trying to sue LimeWire for $75 Trillion in damages - which is more money than the industry has made since the invention of the phonograph.

I use transmission and it does its job. Also has a daemon with handy web-interface and can even connect via specially made phone clients.

In terms of "best", all depends on what features you are looking for.

I've used both Deluge and Transmission.

I like them both, and have used both, its 6 of one half a dozen of the other.

If I had to choose, I'd probably pick Deluge :)

Transmission is very nice. Really simple interface, but what more do you need?
I used to use KTorrent at one stage (on private trackers) so I was able to ban IPs of people not sharing properly :p <-- annoying however if you use Gnome because you need like 100MB extra for KDE libraries.

You're missing the point. Linux is made to be small.

Don't think I am. The kernel was made to be small. I doubt the same goal was ever set for KDE/Gnome which are both bloatware of note.
