I've had a shaped 192k line for a couple of months and I'd been using BitTorrent and Shareaza to great success. When I had 20+ sources I always got fullspeed transfers (20kB/s).

Since 1 August though eveything went downhill. I hardly ever get more than 1kB/s on P2P downloads, no matter how many sources! I even upgraded my line to 384k but made no difference. :( Web transfers are still fullspeed though.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?

I'm with Imaginet.

Same here
on a 512 line.
Highest Torrent speed, for the last month, 1.8 kb/s and peaks of max 3.2 kb/s.
Torrents, newsgroups, gaming and all P2P gone to the rats, absolutely useless.
If I look back a month and a bit it was just pure P2P that was a bit dodgy, the others, gaming, torrents and newsgroups had great speed,

Telkom started to seriously shape the services so soon ADSL is for pure http surfing.

homedsl192 package --->

I use limewire and Shareaza and both are terribly slow lately
I used to get around 15-20kbs
now i get around 1-3kbs

I miss the free proxy service MRBEEP had going
Torrents were flying at 55kb/s on my line. Cant wait for the 1st of September when it will be up again.

same thing happened to me with p2p apps - the only one that sort of works now is bearshare. only thing is the speed is measured in kbps as opposed to the normal KB/s. but all you do is divide by 8. i get around 200kbps downloads depending on the rank of the file and the number of sources - sometimes its more and sometimes its slightly less, but its the only one that isn't crawling at 2-3KB/s.

I also seem to be battling a bit. Used to get +35KB/s on 384, now battling to get 20+. Also depends on the type of torrent one is downloading. The latest movies always tend to go slow. However the odd episode or music is usually +40KB/s still. I'm on 34Gb for the month thus far.

That is what I thought as well.

Its not the type of file that is being downloaded but rether the specific tracker (dunno if this makes sense). I have managed to get movies and music at almost perfect speeds from some trackers and piss poor speeds on others.

Any1 else notice this ?

p2p was working this morning at around 1am.

I tweaked some ports in both Shareaza and my firewall and my download speed upped to about 22KBps

Funny that uploading to overseas p2p clients is pretty quick. Seems like Telkom only shapes the downpipe and not up.

Cheers

Yep - definate aggressive shaping happening for me.

Ok, this weekend was an exception, due to the problems experienced - as soon as they were resolved, my mac x86 torrent shot up to 20k download, stabalising yesterday at around 15k

Now it's a weekday, I "Stabalise" at 1k on the same damn torrent.
(7 peers and 11 seeds total combined speed over 700k)

Now tell me that isn't the most fundamentally aggressive shaping you can think off ?

This simply cannot be the fault of my system, firewall or torrent software, because the pattern is so bloody obvious.

When i heard about this november pay/GB thing i decided to go for the WA 30gB just for a few months to "abuse" the network while i still can. I have been downloading torrents 24/7 @ full speeds up until today, whats happening?

well i am getting max 3kb/sec during day and evening on any torrents i try and download.... local or not.... gg Telkom.

If you download 5-6 torrents at the same time would each one download at 3k?

Umm I have to say I've had no problems in this area... Torrents normally come down at between 45 and 50k... Never had issues.

You guys sure you have enough peers?

Yip. Same problem. Since around the 1st of August the speeds for FTP are just dead! I use to download allot from internasional private FTP sites; generally getting 55KB, now I am getting time outs! ?? !!

I really hate Telkom!

Everything goes thru the SAIX proxy, dunnit? There are ways round that anwyay but the proxy throttles the crap out of everything except http by the looks of it.

Morningside, Sandton, Gauteng.

If I got all my friends together, hired a professional crew and flew Steven Spielberg out on weekends I could make my own movies faster then im downloading them. (If I cancelled my ADSL I could probably afford it too!)
