Torrents causing my inet to disconnect..

I've been having a very weird problem ever since 2-3 months ago. I used to use Azureus client for downloading torrents. After having used it for a few months without any problems, 1 day I noticed that as soon as I put my torrents on to download/upload my internet would disconnect every 5-10-15 minutes. Ever since I have been having this problem. I then changed over to bitcomet, hoping that would solve my problems, which unfortunately didn't do to much to help the cause. I've tried a number of different ports, tried to limit my maximum upload and download speeds, still nothing..

If I download from an ftp, or anything else for that matter, my inet does not disconnect. ONLY with torrents.

This problem is getting very annoying of late, everytime INET disconnects I need to reopen irc, reconnect etc , among other things....

Anyone have any possible solutions on how to overcome this problem?

After a long while I decided to try azureus again and to my delight this sorted the disconnection problems. Who know's whats up with bitcomet then :D
 
I've been using BitComet everyday for about 10 months. For me it has been the most reliable torrent client available. Azureus seems to chow far too much of my PC which is to be expected since Azureus is written in Java and BitComet in C++.

As for your problem, didn't you think it possible that there might be something wrong with your ADSL modem/router? The problem sounds familiar of that which alot of us have had. Frequent disconnections can be related to faulty equipment or even something wrong on Telkom's part ( would this come as a surprise? ) which may be solved now ( as miraculous as i may sound! ).

You might want to try re-installing BitComet just to check whether or not the problem is related to it or not. If the problem starts again, try using BitComet on another computer connected to the same router/modem. If there are no problems on the second computer, I recommend a Full system virus scan because I haven't even heard of a problem like this with BitComet. If there are problems on the second computer you know who to phone, but how easy it can be to get Telkom off their arses to inspect your router or your line is another story.
 
I have exactly the same problem in the UK - all network and internet connections fine, I had BitComet running fine for about 48 hours after installation, and then it starts disconnecting me every couple of minutes - I "loose" the IP address allocated by my ISP and have to manually get my modem to renew it in order to reconnect. Any my laptop (on the same network) also does that same. I can run other P2P (WinMX, Limewire) no problem though.

As a matter of interest, are you using a DLink modem or router?

I got a new pc 2 weeks ago, and a new router(previous 1 hit by lightning) and decided to install bitcomet once again. Problems seem sorted, no disconnections anymore. Strange :)
 
This all depends on what you mean by disconnect.

1: My Marconi modem crashes and I have to reboot it.

This is normal behaviour for this device running as a router. It cannot handle the load placed on it by p2p applications such as emule or bittorrent. You can solve this by using XP's pppoe client and establishing a pppoe dialup through the device rather than using it as a router. This bypasses any NAT that the router would have to do which is wehre the modem is mostly flawed.

2: My internet just stop working but my modem is fine.

With Service Pack2 microsoft added a little feature that allows you to have only 10 half open connections. This can be a problem because after that, the machine will not be able to open more connections, and will seem to be disconnected. The latest version of bitcomet takes this into account but, by default, it uses all 10 half open connections. Try to maybe reduce that to 5 so that the operating system and other software has some leway with bad connections they might encounter. Optionaly search google on how to modify your tcpip.sys file to allow more half open connections.

the same thing happens to me sometimes. If I connect to internet and start a torrent straight away after a few minutes my connection just drops. It only happens when I start a torrent.
 
What router are you guys using? According to opinions on some forums, it's a known issue for the Netgear DG632 to hang after a while with the use of P2P applications due to the numerous connections.
 
With azureus and 56k/isdn I had the same disconnection problems. Only reason for that could be that azureus in some way simply chokes the connection after a while.

Other clients didnt have this effect.
 
Same thing as IE and Firefox wamatt, takes a little while for ppl to realize which is superior =)
 
well currently I dont touch azureus, its to bloated.

I by far, prefer using ABC :) small,compact and just enough features for me
 
So, I join you all, I installed yesterday Azureus and..... my internet dropps and I cannot reconnect to my ISP. I have to shut down and reboot. Very much annoying....

there is no specific time, sometimes after a few seconds and then it runs for two hours..very strange...
