Hi MyBB!

Looking for some advice regarding purchasing a Laptop that has a decent touchscreen and, if possible, a decent screen that flips around. My worry about these laptops is that the screen hinges take a bit of a beating and wanted to know whether anyone has had any issues with the stylus not working anymore etc.

My wife thanks you for the advice!

Lenovo Yoga.
Regarding the stylus, take into account the nibs and batteries required.
Mine required AAAA batteries, yes 4 A(s).

I have the HP Elitebook X360 1040 for over a year now, no issues to report. Purchased the Lenovo Flex 5 R7 about

3 month ago, also no issues to report.

I would agree with this recommendation.

The Yoga is pretty damned decent.
If budget is not a huge concern, the HP Spectre x360 or Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 are fantastic choices as well.

Budget max R20k but would be keen to try to find lower for Black Friday if possible. i5 is fine but min 16GB RAM + SSD...larger the screen, the better.

What are the upgrade options like regarding the Dell vs HP vs Lenovo? Can I just purchase OTC SSD/RAM modules without any issues? I HATE it when manufacturers mess around when you can only use certain types of memory modules etc...

Well if you’re going for the 2-in-1/360 hinge models, most probably it will be an ultrabook so things will be soldered.

My Yoga isn’t upgradable, the last Flex I had was. If you don’t need it for graphical use(Wacom panel), you could also look at the Lenovo X1 Carbon range.

My wife has the Dell XPS 13 7390, the first of the "new" design with the 10th gen CPUs.
It's a great laptop. The hinge looks and feels sturdy, and it has that one hand opening thing which is supposedly something that denotes quality. It also looks great. To me it still looks better than anything on the market right now, except maybe the new 13" MBP.

Windows 10 works surprisingly well in touch screen mode.

I haven't used a stylus with it, as those are expensive and not something we need. I still want to buy one to try out though. Here's hoping for Black Friday.

The Dell is completely non-upgradable, with both the RAM and SSD soldered. The regular 13" is upgradable, but not the 2-in-1 model. It does have a mini-SD card slot, so I use that for movies and other large files.
The other problem is that they seem to only bring in the "default" preconfigured models. That means if you want 16GB RAM, you will most likely have to get an i7. Want a bigger SSD? Hope you find one which isn't bundled with the 4K monitor option (and a larger price tag).
I tried to order from Dell SA and spec one myself (we had an account through work), but it was nauseatingly expensive.

The other option is the Inspiron range, which also look pretty good, although the build quality is lower and the display isn't nearly as good as on the XPS. They also come in 14" and 15" models, and are also much cheaper than the XPS 13.

Edit: If I ever don't get a laptop from work, I would seriously consider getting a Dell 2-in-1. They really great and very versatile.

Thanks for all the responses.

My wife has mentioned that she needs >14inch screen. I have been eyeballing the HP Envy X360. Anyone have any decent experience with the newer HP laptops? I have an old HP G3 450 laptop that I used as a media/HA server and it was okay until the HDD decided to kick the can. The build quality on the 450 isn't the best so I am a bit worried about such a large screen that flips over so far etc.

We bought the kids a really cheap touch screen tablet computer thing, even with the abuse of the kids that thing is still going strong a few months later, considering that I'm sure the hinges on the expensive ones will do just fine.

I went from the HP Probook 450 G3 to the HP Elitebook, worlds apart, the build quality on the Elitebook is way superior.

I’d suggest going in-shop and getting a feel before pulling the trigger.

Finally pulled the trigger on the HP Envy X360 s15 model
11th gen i7 (yes I know the 12th gen has released but ain't nobody got time for that)
1TB NVME SSD - has space for 2.5inch SATA internal as well
16GB Ram
Onboard GFX but wife won't use laptop for any gaming purposes

Reviews were all very good and the best thing - it's dead easy to do RAM + HDD upgrades when the time arises! I hate it when manufacturers go the Apple route and make it as hard as possible to upgrade/replace items that can easily conk. What the hell is the point of soldering RAM + HDD anyway?

From where and what they hit you down for it?

I'm also contemplating a new laptop as a XMas present for myself...

Y'all going to hate and lambast me but bought from Evetech - let's hope there aren't any warranty issues early on :(

Thats not too shabby, and being an HP you can theoretically bypass EveTech and go straight to their warranty people (as far as I know)

The sad reality is that if you want decent selection of laptops to choose from, you have Evetech and Incredible Connection.

I was looking at importing from Amazon or even waiting for Black Friday but I figured it's a decent laptop at a good price considering delivery etc etc.

I hope the HP direct warranty will apply @ToxicBunny
