I've got two (very low budget) options here, They're both just under R1600, and that would be it for my budget. If it could go higher I'd get the T220 or 2333SW.

Either the LG W2261V 21.5" 16:9 1920X1080 (looks much better, definitely the better monitor in terms of specs)

or the Viewsonic VX2240W 22" 16:10 1650X1050
http://www.digitalversus.com/article-596-2920-41.html (Interestingly other review sites are generally negative about this monitor, although DigitalVersus is about the best monitor review site)

I'd basically decided that I want a 16:10 monitor for web programming, but the LG is now at the same price. Do you guys think 1920X1080 would make things too small to read and too small vertically at only 21.5"?

I won't be playing Blu-Ray content any time soon, but I suppose in about 2 years I might be.

I say get the 16:9 screen. If you want full 16:10 (1920x1200) in 22" then have a look at the Lenovo L220x and gather up some of your mate's wallets. :)

I still have a CRT 19" Philips monitor which I run @ 1600x1200. I like the fact I can get so much more text on the screen when I'm working. I suspect an LCD would have much more clearer text than this monitor at this resolution. At the office I have 19" LCD but they only run 1280x1024 and that annoys me. I have a 17" LCD there with the same resolution and prefer it for the crisper text. Have to scroll much too often on either... or is my code just too long?

No, but I use the TrueType tweaking tool on the LCDs and it does an excellent job in cleaning up those funny colour bleeds.

Honestly, save a bit more and get a 23".....you'll always wonder what you're missing out on.

It's only a few hundred more :)

get this

2333SW 23 WIDE TFT, 1920 X 1080, 5 Millisecond, .282mm dot pitch, 20000:1(Dynamic) Contrast Ratio, Analogue/DVI, Tilt, Swivel Stand, MagicBright3, Glare Model - NEW R1903 incl VAT

from pcint.co.za

iv got one and love it....

Get the 2333SW or the 2494HS.

I would go for the 2494HS as it has HDMI (if you ever get a PS3 or blu-ray player). DVI is a hassle for anything but PC or XBOX360 .

As for things being too small to read on the screen, you can always increase the dpi in windows from 96 to 120. That makes things perfectly clear.

Er.. thanks guys, well not really :p, but seriously around R1500 is probably my budget, I know all about these other screens. And the Kalahari special isn't on anymore, and pcint is just another R100+ for shipping.

In any case I'm basically wondering if anyone has a 21.5" 1920X1080 screen and if it's too short vertically and if the resolution is too high on a smaller screen?

I don't have a problem with 22" 16:10, the height might be preferable. I also don't have a PS3 etc, no blu ray player in the near future either. It's just for programming and normal movies, not gaming either really.

Zones has the LG full hd 22" for R1400 right now. I'd say 16;10 is preferable to 16:9 - keep it at 1680 unless you want to watch a 1080 movie. esp for playing games that resolution it's a waste of gpu power.

Aah that's the other weird thing, LG seem to have two almost identical monitors; the 2243S that Zones has and the W2261V that sybaritic have for R1542, which is what I was going for. From the model numbers it sound like my original choice is better?

The W2261 gets a good review anyway, but full 22" with more height also seems better to me, unless 1920X1080 really gives you more usable screen space? (Never had an LCD before either)

You need to look at it from what you are used too. What was the resolution you were working on before? I'm used to a 1200 height on a CRT, so an LCD upgrade would need that height as minimum.

I've just upgraded from a 19" CRT at 1024x768 to 2 X 22" LED backlit LCDs running at 1680 X 1050

I thought the jump in resolution would be hard on my eyes but it's been fine. No problems at all.

Viewsonic VLED221wm

Not stocked locally, had to import them. I had no choice because fluorescent backlighting makes me sick :(

Ah, ok. Was just surprised to hear about them. LED is still very expensive and adds some heavy bulk to the monitor, as can be seen in NEC's LED offering.

What's your take on it?

Well I don't play games, I'm a coder, and I love these monitors. The images are breathtaking from my amatuer perspective.

But beyond that, I'm just thrilled to be able to use an LCD without getting nauseus in 10mins!

When my CRT's started to give up the ghost I was seriously stressing, because I've never been able to sit infront of an LCD without feeling headachey and nauseus in about 10mins. It was unbearable.

So I'm thrilled I was able to get hold of these LED backlit displays :) Although it was a pain. I think I paid R2000 for overnight shipping but DHL stuffed up the customs documents around 15 times and caused the shipment to be stuck in customs for about six weeks....
