Tourist jailed over visa problem

Yet, they arrest a border patrol soldier for shooting at a Zimbabwean who didn't listen to repeated calls to stay on their side of the border or get proper papers.... Silly country this.

Question is: Would the British authorities have done the same to a South-African visiting their country?

probably yes. Britain doesnt really give a flying **** what south africa says.

to me, the more important question, would the s.a. consulate have gotten involved had a s.a. visitor ended up jailed in britain for visa irregularities (p.s. I already know the answer to this one)

I'm guessing its not a very positive one either!

She and her unsuspecting South African boyfriend Brett Wundram, were expecting to pay a fine as her visa had expired at the end of December.

Good to hear that nothing bad happened to her whilst being in prison.

What did she expect with an expired visitor's visa ?

She could have been a bit more pro-active.

RompelStompel : I've had a friend come across from the states before, and no matter how much they tried to extend their visa, it was like talking to a brick wall. The extension was never denied, the paper work just constantly got lost or they had no record of it or blah blah blah....

TB - Thanks for that.

This was despite her explanation that her passport and life partner permit application was with a private immigration company who were attempting to secure an extension to her visa.

Maybe the company or the S.A. Dept of Home Affairs screwed up.

Was a bit OT in a way i spose :)

Maybe the private company did screw up, but given the track record of this government, its more likely they're "lost" the paper work or something...

Really? My ex-gf was out here from Europe at one stage and needed to extend her visa/entrry permit beyond the 90 days and it was incredibly easy. Just collected up the paperwork they needed, went down to Home Affairs, paid the R500 or whatever and it was done instantly. They didn't quite seem to know what they were doing or what the requirements were to be honest, but at least they did it. :D

Looking at the pic she is young and naive. Maybe it accounts for the bombastic public Macho service, maybe it was because of her looks?

I've had to jump through all the home affairs hoops at one time or another both for myself and for others. Not fun to say the least.

Yeah, maybe the officials were hoping for an "unofficial" payment to ease the process a bit and weren't happy when it wasn't forthcoming.
